Who should have played Bella?

Dear Twilight-

It’s no secret that I’m not crazy about Kristen Stewart as an actress. Moon & I have admitted as much way back since the beginning of this blog. Well obviously it’s because she’s with Rob obviously b/c obviously I sensed their magicness the first time I saw Twilight and was so jealous obviously. (Do you see what I did there? I used sarcasm to out myself as a nonsten)

No but seriously, I’ve never been crazy about Kristen Stewart as an actress. I’ve said it time & time again. We don’t need to debate her acting right now. You can like Kristen, I don’t care (But if you want to debate it read this post:  it’s a good read)

But we should talk about this question I thought of yesterday:

As I was driving into work I was thinking about LTT. I was thinking about what Moon and I have done for now over 2 years and how to explain it to someone who is outside of it- maybe to someone who doesn’t know Twilight or anything about the fandom. And I realized (or I admitted) that we’ve said some HARSH things over the years. And every time we have we’ve known the backlash we might get or the reactions we probably could expect. We’ve rarely been surprised by a reaction. So I was thinking about explaining to someone about one of the more contentious things we talk about- Kristen. And I was thinking that this imaginary person talking to me in my car might ask me, “Well, if not Kristen, then who would you want to play Bella? ” and I was stumped by myself talking to myself as an imaginary person asking me that question. (I’m crazy in the car in the morning, clearly.)

I don’t know!? Who would I want to play Bella? Kristen Stewart is Bella! I never thought about that before- I never thought about anyone else playing Bella. We’ve never explored that before, even on LTT. So today we’re going to discuss who should’ve played Bella:

Well the first OBVIOUS choice OBVIOUSLY is.. me!

Here are the reasons why. I’m beautiful, as evidenced by this picture:

(Sidenote: That was made for me LONG Before Face-in-a-hole did it. LOOK at the date on the poster!) Also, I’m very sexy (You know, all the things Bella should be) and I really really really want to make out with Rob on a bed.

Bite Me

Well, if I can’t get the role, then who else? I swear that I remember seeing that Lucy Hale was in the running for Bella at one point. She’s adorable . I love Pretty Little Liars & the scandelous teacher/student relationship. Plus I love those pants movies. But Lucy as Bella? Hmmm… Not so much.

I’ve heard people mention Kat Dennings. Probably because she’s sarcastic & not so super girly- sorta has the Bella personality. But she has really big boobs (NOT how Bella was described). Plus there was a photoshoot she did with Rob oh so long ago…

Bellas

Stephenie’s first choice was Emily Browning. I don’t know much about her- but she definitely has that “girl next door” LOOK that Moon & I had imagined a little bit more for Bella. I can see why Stephenie picked her.

But WHO ELSE has that Bella persona? And what other American brunette’s have I forgotten to mention? Who could pull it off? Who would just CLICK as Bella?

The reality is, I’ve never thought that someone else should be Bella. I’ve just never THOUGHT about it. And now that I just did in today’s letter, I don’t think anybody else is right for it. Maybe it’s because Kristen’s played her in 3 movies & I can’t imagine anyone else as Bella. When I think of Bella now, I see Kristen in my mind. I don’t even see whoever it was I had pictured as Bella before I knew Kristen would be playing her. There literally is no one else that comes to mind. And despite not enjoying her acting as I never have, obviously because she gets to “do it” with Rob Pattinson obviously, I don’t think anyone else should play Bella, (well, besides myself of course!!)

xoxo,
UnintededChoice

Congrats Kristen, you ARE Bella to me (exactly what you want to hear!) What do YOU think? Have you ever pictured another actress as Bella? Think anyone else could pull it off better? Pick me! Pick me!

Oh- wanna watch something fun- aka a bad video to a bad song, but fun nonetheless?! Here’s a video showing all of Stephenie’s original cast picks. Some are SO interesting!

  • Alice_NaA

The girl that comes closest to how I pictured Bella while reading is Alexis Bledel (Gilmore girls,…). I think she really has that innocent and natural beauty thing about her. Don’t think there would have been ANY onscreen chemistry with Rob whatsoever though. She doesn’t look like the “into hobo”-type.

    • nocoolname

Ooh, good choice. I love Alexis Bledel. Still, though, I think she’s a little too pretty to be Bella (as is, I think, KS). I still picture Bella as a little more plain, like she’s described in the books. I NEVER picture KS when I’m reading, even still.

      • TeamSeth

This! Bella is plain. She just is. Kristen is not plain. I’m not sure any actress is, though. It’s not really in the “Hollywood get big” actress protocol handbook.

        • Ish

I beg to differ. I always pictured Bella as really pretty. Natural pretty but totally unawear of the fact. Sort of ugly duckling syndrome. just had to put my two cents in again xx

          • TeamSeth

I dunno… In the POS work, Midnight Sun, Edward is quite clear he does not find her special [looking]. And later when he’s all rose colored glasses over her, he has the “How could I ever thought she wasn’t attractive?” Which means that she may just be beautiful to him…when wearing low cut blue shirts…

          • Anonymous

I think Bella is pretty the way most people are pretty, meaning there are really very few people who are truly *GAH* ugly, and most people have nice eyes, or good skin, or something that one could find attractive once you bother to notice them.

I am not a KStew hater, I see what some people are saying (Girlfriend has been doing lip and nail bitey awkward since back in tha’ day!) but I think she’s cute and seems to make interesting film choices. That said, I don’t picture her when I picture Book Bella. I don’t picture RPattz really, either. My unending and soon to be mutual crazypants love for him has very little to do with my desire to lick the frost off Edward’s…well, nevermind.

          • Ish

hahaha I was going to make a comment on the extreme serious and sensible comment you made until I read on hahahhahaha thanks just made my day. btw I totally agree that very few people are realy ugly or really beautiful. most of us are pretty ok but its our personality that makes us amazing. I get pissed off at KStew’s portrayel of Bella sometime re NM meadow “emotional collapse” (or lack of) but think that she seems like the bella in my head including all the arkwardness.

          • Anonymous

Yeah, girl can do awkward, for sure. I am not sure why MovieE/B are so different from BookE/B, meaning how much is the actors and how much are the weird director decisions? Like why didn’t B *freak out* and run through the woods in NM? Why did she just trot around mumbling “Edward?” like a crazy homeless person? And when she falls in the book, it’s so powerful, like she simply **can’t** get up. In the movie she’s all “OK now NAPPIES!”

Oh, and glad I can make your day with my inappropriateness. QUESTION: If he is so ice-like, do you think your tongue would stick, like on a frozen pole in winter?

          • Anonymous

Now I will never see that scene in A Christmas Story the same way again. Thanks for that.

          • Anonymous

In the movie extra features (i think) there was more B wandering aimlessly. CW said they took it out for time constraints. And some people don’t freak out when they lose the love of their life. It’s a shock and wandering around the woods aimlessly seems like that is protrayed, IMO.

          • Anonymous

Maybe I need to re-read, but I thought there was running and freaking. Maybe that just happened in my head.

            Also: A Christmas Story! *snortlaugh*

          • Anonymous

Okay, just broke the book out! She’s not wandering aimlessly. She’s searching for Edward because once she stops that means he’s really gone. She trips over something and just lies there on the forest floor. She’s finally given up hope, she’s beaten. (not physically!) And while she’s laying there she realizes that theres no moonlight. It’s a New Moon. (didn’t remember that) Until finally she hears voices. No freakout, no powerful collapse. But I think that’s what many people do. Yes, there will be emotional times ahead for her but the intial shock is just that…a shock.

          • Anonymous

So the freaking out just happened in my mind. That is unsurprising, really.

          • Anonymous

TRUE CONFESSION TIME: Every time I watch New Moon, a secret part of me hopes that *this time* he won’t leave. #whatupdelusional

          • Ish

you so regret typing that don’t you. Admit, your cheeks pinkened (also a word see slickery) as you typed. hahahahha love it. we should organize a competition. who can do the BEST Bella interpretation in the meadow just before she meets with Laurent. Film your scene and send it in. Could be epic. could also be very second hand painfully embarassing :)

          • Anonymous

“pinkened”, yes. My brain loves it’s happy magical thinking. Thankfully I have the other part of my brain that just sits there with its brain-eyebrow raised at it at all times.

And I think the Bella impressions should be saved for some future LTT convention with lots and lots of liquor involved.

          • Madelynn

I agree to that too. Bella is pretty, she just compared herself to Barbie looking girls in Arizona and since she is white and a brunette, she doesn’t feel adequate. Edward said that she wasn’t pretty before he fell in lover her yes but he didn’t think ANY of the humans were pretty!

      • Madelynn

I don’t think Alexis has the acting range..I dont know though but she always seems to play the same character. Like it would have been Rory falling in love with Edward not Bella…

    • natteringyeahrobber

But imagine Rory in a plaid shirt. And Dean in tweed. Lane Kim as Jessica, clearly. Rory and Dean might have worked as Bella and Edward. A plaid shirt & brown hair is really all you need to pull off the “into hobo-ish brooding vampires” look.

      • apple

No, I can’t picture Dean as Edward at all. Maybe Jess, at least he’s got the right hairstyle.

        • Anonymous

Yah, I was just kidding, mostly. Rob as Edward works best. Jess has the right hair for sure, though. And he’s not bad at broody/moody, he has all the makings of a sullen Cullen, but just..not..quite..right.

          • operarose

What about Logan? A bit of bronze hair dye, and voila… ;)

          • gizmo

Omg Logan Huntzberger! I would have Logan play Mike. Or Riley.

          • TeamSeth

Nah, no one wants an avocado tree!

          • operarose

ugghhhhhhhh I hate that they didn’t end up together at the end. Boo. I would take an avocado tree. And California. I think of Rory whenever I go to Palo Alto and see avocado trees (yes it’s happened).

          • TeamSeth

No way! Rory was never meant to be with Logan. She’s a strong, independent woman who should take control!

        • TeamSeth

          Oh Jess! I <3ed him!

      • ChillinWithCullens

I always hated Dean for some reason… he always freaked out about the littlest things…

    • Anonymous

I think Alexis would have been a good choice. But you are right, chemistry is vital for this role.

      • KL☼ W4E♥ Ami♣ BD1♂2♀ Csmpls♦

Did you notice once R&K finally “got together” after Twilight their big-screen chemistry fizzled? I think it’s cause there wasn’t any tension there anymore once they started traveling the world together and sharing hotel rooms. ♥ I hope the magic comes back in BD since they won’t need tension anymore…just a few beds…

    • gizmo

I don’t know. I am obsessed with Gilmore Girls even after all this time. But somehow Alexis desn’t work for me outside of that show. Too bland. As Rory, yes. Anything else, I lose interest.

      • Alice_NaA

The utter boringness of her persona was actually what made her a perfect Bella (the epitome of boringness) in my eyes :p.

        • gizmo

That’s true. But I don’t think she’d be able to generate any on-screen sexual tension with any guy.

        • TeamSeth

          Here here!

      • MariaCecilia

Yes, I liked Alexis in Gilmore Girls, but I agree about the “too pretty” and the “too bland” comment. But it would have been interesting to see what she would have made of Bella.. perhaps she’s got all that alternative/ feisty side locked up inside of her?
I bet she will make Bella in the extended tv-series version of Twilight! (Which will ultimately become indistinguishable from re-runs of Gilmore girls and Vampire diaries, “oh, Bella is helping Esmee out in her café, and Esmee is chiding her, while Carlisle comes in from wood chopping and Edward and Jasper sit brooding over lattes in the corner watching Bella and her best friend Alice help out at the counter”…meh)

    • operarose

Before casting for the movie began, I remember that’s one of the names the fans bounced around. She definitely has the Bella look but I selfishly don’t think I could stand “Rory” to be playing Bella. I watch GG all of the time and am afraid that things like the spider monkey line would have ruined Alexis/Rory for me! Does that make any sense? I guess what I want to say is… Stars Hollow is better left untouched by Forks! (Yes sometimes I live in my own delusional world, just like Lorelai and Rory…)

      • gizmo

Hi. Another GG nerd right here. It’s on repeat in my house and it never gets old and most of the time I want to live in Stars Hollow.

        • I Am Amanda

          And another!

Copper boom! Where did all the anvils go? Oy with the poodles already…Hockey puck, rattle snake, monkey, monkey, underpants.

          (I really really love GG…)

        • operarose

          same here!
We should all get together and start a quaint New England village together where we can devote ourselves to Lorelai, Rory, and Edward. We shall form a cult around them. Build a statue many stories high. We shall grow our hair long and stop bathing. (okay maybe not the last one.)

          • gizmo

Yes! The statue can be by the gazebo. And we can have our very own Festival of Living Art and reanact all of Carlisle’s Volturi paintings. And Lorelai’s Wolfgirl. Remember when her mother gave it to her as a wedding/engagement present? Good times. The connection is quite ironic: Emily – Wolfgirl.
Also, we have to have a Kirk. Solomon Trimble maybe?

          • gizmo

            And Cathi Hardy as Babette.

    • http://twitter.com/Shahyra Natasha

I thought the same! Rori!!!! I had picture her in my mind as Bella while reading the books.

    • TeamSeth

I like her for the role after seeing her in the pants movies. When they all go to greece to have her get the guy and she says “He broke my heart!” I always cry. Aww.

Plus, Alexis is really good at doing the whole selfless thing, which, at heart, is really truly why Edward goes for Bella. Because she’s not like a normal selfish human, and he admires that. That’s what makes her so beautiful and perfect to him. And in the movies, they just completely strip her of that and expect us to care about her at all. It’s a bunch of crap.

      /end mini rant

    • Jamee

I like Bledel but still like the Stewart more. I know many don’t like Kristen and envy her but the on-screen chemistry between her and Robert are what made me want to check out this Twilight thing people kept yammering about.

not the books, not Rob’s hotness but Kristen AND Rob’s on-screen chemistry.

3 successful Twi movies later and people still bring up this thing?

      0_0

      • Meg

I ALWAYS saw Alexis as Bella. And I think I saw Jess (Milo) as Edward a lot. It wasn’t really Jess, but it was like a toned down version of him.

Oh and Rory and Jess all the way!

  • JodieO

I dunno… I thought that cheeseburger did a pretty good job in Twilight and Cheeseburgers…

The problem I have when trying to think of a different actress is that I can’t think of any other actress in that age bracket without coming up with the Disney girls and none of them are quite right..

Except perhaps Elena what’s-her-face from Vampire Diaries, but she’s got a better deal with TWO hot vampires and NO Ninabians.

    • TeamSeth

      Nah, Nina’s too sexy.

  • Workshy

If Kristen was not cast as Bella, Rob would not have been Edward. You could have been crushing on Shiloh Fernandez. THAT is something to think about.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001626556180 Lita Gabriel

so true! i didnt picture The Rob AT ALL when i first read Twilight.

    • JodieO

Without trigonometry there would be no engineering. Without lamps there would be no light.

Without KStew, we would have still had an Edward.

    • sw_twi_fan

I also heard that Ashley Greene tried out for Bella. Ashley and Shiloh is in a movie together called Skateland. It will be like seeing what the alternate E/B would look like. I wonder what kind of chemistry they have.

    • KL☼ W4E♥ Ami♣ BD1♂2♀ Csmpls♦

That’s a horrible thought isn’t it? It’d rather have Rob and deal with Kristen. [who I like, she's just not my BOOK Bella] ♥

    • Miss Miller

I was wondering when someone was going to make a comment about the man who is a million times hotter than Rob could ever imagine to be!!!! Charlie is the hottest thing to walk the planet, hands down.

      Commence hating…

  • Ninirific

I always wanted Alexis Bledel as Bella. Still do!

  • Late Convert

We watched Twilight in French the other night. Admittedly it was a bit weird because the accents were coming out of the original actors, but the voices and inflections all just seemed soooo wrong. That’s not how they’re meant to sound!

    • Anonymous

But I’ve also seen parts in Spanish (I don’t know much Spanish, but sometimes NEED to see NM and most English versions have been pulled off YouTube by Summit). And Spanish dub works really well for Twilight. I think Hindi would work well too, though I would have to have one of my Dad’s Bollywood soundtracks playing in the background. Russian dub would work well too.

      • TeamSeth

What about the Spanish/Hindi/Russian dubs works so well? I mean, I super love Eduard (as established back in the day), but I’m curious why you say that about those languages :)

      • ThinWildMercury

haha! Do you undertand Hindi NYH? Because the epicness/cheesiness increases tenfold when you hear the corny tranlations! Hindi is a dramatic language to begin with. Add bad translators to the mix and you have the biggest cringe/laughfest since the twi hospital scene.

        • Anonymous

No Hindi, just a little Bengali. But I’ve seen probably many movies in Hindi (subtitled) and I do think a Twilight Bollywood version would be awesome. There is already the high drama, the love triangle, the passion, the parental conflicts, the family feuds. All the necessary ingredients. Someone should rewrite for Bollywood, then use Google translate Hindi to English for the subtitles. That would be awesome.

  • TwilightCat

    I agree with Workshy.

Pardon me as I lapse into Medieval metaphor: Kristen was the Maiden to Rob’s Unicorn. Without Kristen, Cathi Hardi never would have captured Rob for the Twi-films.

(Though looking at the video above, I agree with Stephenie – Henry Cavill would have been HAWT as Edward, even though he was 24 at the time of casting.)

    • Anonymous

Doesn’t Henry Cavill play Brandon on the Tudors? Hawt.

      • TwilightCat

Yes, and he’s going to play Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming Superman reboot. I am so looking forward to seeing him in that blue spandex!

    • MariaCecilia

Yes, I totally got what Stephanie saw in Henry, (Tudors, swoon) but I agree that he would have seemed too old to Kristen’s Bella when Twilight was made. But since Edward grew up and became so tweed serious in NM Henry could probably have got the job as Rob’s stand in after that, without trouble? Picture him with a pipe in the library! Tweed serious hot!

  • Sweetasapeach

song is awesome…i think the cast they picked works perfectly!

  • nocoolname

If those were in fact her picks for the cast, then I think Summit should have left the casting up to The Meyer herself. ALL of them, in my opinion, would have been better choices than who was actually cast. Except for, maybe, Rob and Kellan.

And FOR SURE The Meyer’s pick for Rosalie would have been better.

    • TeamSeth

“And FOR SURE The Meyer’s pick for Rosalie would have been better.”

I think all picks would be better. OR dying her eyebrows.

      • Anonymous

Right?! Do they not have eyebrow dyeing technology in LA? Nikki is so hotness as a brunette, too. What is with Twilight hair? *shakes head*

        • BreakingTheEclipse

LoL, absolutely.  They are a huge mistake, especially in Eclipse. Yikes!

  • Anonymous

Damn I have to say SM’s pick were pretty good, except Emmett and Carlisle. Lucy may have been a good pick but a little too cute. I think you are right, who other than Kristin? Emily Browning may have had the attitude, but her lips stand out too much for the role. Kat – no way. I did picture Bella to be a little shorter, more angry kitten like.

I am not very good at imagining characters as I read about them. It’s more of an unfocused view, fuzzy line. For instance Edward, I pictured his Adonis body and maybe jaw line hair and eye color, but not more than that. The movie Bella didn’t really show her clumsy or teary side.

Overall I am happy with the Bella and Edward chosen for the roles.

    • TeamSeth

SM has bigger pouty lips, maybe that’s what drew her to Emily?

    • TeamSeth

I actually agree with your statement on Edward. I am retracting my comment from earlier about how I see him. It’s exactly like you say! Fuzzy. He’s a greek god in one moment, and then something else in another. It’s just always morphing. Which makes sense, because everyone’s Edward should be different.

I just really see him as a greek statue all the time. A gray white marble with a perfectly sculpted body. And when they go to kiss I imagine his venom rushing forward like when you feel like you might throw up and your mouth fills with saliva (er, tmi?) Anyway, I always think his venom tastes gross, like that stuff they put on your thumb as a kid so you won’t suck on it. And I always think it’s colored, like a weird yellowish color. And kind of like a whale, he keeps it behind his teeth when they kiss. Sigh.

Why is my most detailed Edward image of his venom?!

      • Anonymous

I always see it as slightly fluorescent and viscous, like radiator fluid or that liquid laundry soap that is kind of opalescent. Yeah, and not just the venom in his mouth, but other, ahem, bodily fluids. I guess we both have overactive imaginations about this.

        • TeamSeth

Ooh! That’s good! But, I don’t see it as a greeny yellow, more muted? But not like urine. Oh god. Gross.

          • Anonymous

This is my favorite conversation so far. I admire your commitment to Sparkle Motion.

          • BreakingTheEclipse

Lol, I guess I just saw it as a white/clear spit-like color.  Bidunno.

      • MariaCecilia

Ugh, stop it, now I don’t even want to kiss Edward anymore! You make it sound like the venom make his teeth yellow and furry like he never brushes them or something. Yuck!
I agree with not having a clear picture of Edward before the movie (which is why it meant so much to me once I saw it!) – but now I still have a problem with Edward’s happy trail et al. I always thought the marble statue part meant a smooth chest without body hair? I never saw a marble statue with fuzz attached before..so I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. His fuzz, that is. (How do you wrap your mind around fuzz..oh, never mind!)

        • Anonymous

Ok where does the fuzz come from. I picture soft skin over a hard…

          • MariaCecilia

No, no that’s NOT what she said!! (Ugh, now I have to bleach my mind from pictures of a sparklepeen covered in glistening FUR! Yuck, twicefold yuck!)

          • BreakingTheEclipse

            Sparklepeen.  Hehe.

        • Anonymous

Right, much as I love Rob, he’s one hairy guy, and it’s not at all what I picture when the book says “smooth and marble-like”. The gorilla forearms and five-o’clock shadow kind of turned me off when I first saw Twilight the movie, but, how shall I say, I learned to accept it on further study of Rob.

        • TeamSeth

Yes! Fuzz = NO! Really, I think Rob did NOT commit to his character enough. I mean, he needed to wax, dye his hair, work out and eat only meat patties, and actually look like a greek god marble statue thing. “WE ARE SPARTA” is just not ever something I see him yelling, or thinking, and sheesh, Edward IS Sparta. Anyway. Ahem. Some other actors were a little more committed I think. And, it’s not like Rob isn’t into committing, did you SEE his nasty long nails in Little Ashes?

          • Anonymous

*snortlaugh* “Edward IS Sparta”. So true.

And remember when he TOTALLY made out with that other dude in the Dali movie? I am going to go remember that right now. Mmmmmcommitment…..rowr!

          • TeamSeth

my fave part was when he got off while watching lorca bone that chick and he sitting next to the radiator… i usually just call it “the radiator scene”

          • Anonymous

Yeah that was hotness. Let’s rate “the radiator scene” vs. “the tent scene” for Most Boy on Boy Sexual Tension.

          • TeamSeth

I don’t think they’re comparable. Radiator scene will always win.

          • Anonymous

Yeah, you’re right. BookTentScene is pretty good, but mostly because they are naked. (oh wait, I think that only happens in my mind, also…) Radiator Scene FTW!

          • Anonymous

Rob looked a lot less hairy in the Headmaster Holiday vid (at the beginning of BD). I’m thinking Condon did have him waxed a little. At least so the white make up doesn’t keep clumping up in his arm hair!

And thanks for the Happy Trail mention! Good times
            As for the radiator mention-hahaha

          • Anonymous

“Edward IS Sparta” would make another great shirt. Just have that in large font across a picture of one of those leather loincloths from 300. Or, for a more mature set, a leather Depends.

        • sweetinator88

hairless Edward please! i keep begging with my mind for someone to make him shave his chest hair but no one can hear my thoughts!
          darn you people.
it makes me mad in NM when i see the Italy scene when he takes his shirt off (and is going to walk into the sunshine). I’m going “WHY IS EDWARD HAIRY?!?!? PALE AND HAIRY DO NOT GO WELL TOGETHER! he’s supposed to be marbley smooth!”

          • TeamSeth

hahaha this reminded me of that Whores Mascara music video “All I Want [Is a Cute Blond Boy]” when the man with Condon glasses shows up with a razor in the guy’s bathroom. Mwahahaha!

          • sweetinator88

hahaha i do not know that reference but it sounds hilarious!

          • TeamSeth

You MUST youtube it. It’ll change your life. Then watch their video for Monogamous.

        • BreakingTheEclipse

Bwaahaha!  Thank you.  They shaved him in Twilight (sept for some blonde baby hairs that stood out when he was a-sparklin’ in the sun).  But the director in Eclipse and NM didn’t seem to care.  Damn them.  He shouldn’t have hair at all there, it feels wrong.

In fact, I feel that Vamps in general should not have facial hair. Here’s my theory:  They don’t grow or change right?  So, then wouldn’t their hair be stuck at the same length for eternity?  Then why do their styles keep changing (i.e. Jasper).  Sigh.

I liked their hair styles best in Twilight.

      • Anonymous

Never thought about the venom, other than the burn and crazy thirst.

    • sweetinator88

yes! fuzzy! that is exactly how i see characters in books!
i think i already commented somewhere saying that Bella for me was kind of like… an empty space in which i place my conciousness, since i’m seeing it from her point of view, but my brain really only shows what is described at the moment.
for example when Bella goes to school early and (i might be speaking from Midnight Sun POV… (that book sucks btw, never wish to read the rest)) she sits there doing her homework or something? and it says something about how her hair shines reddish in the sunlight?
maybe Mike Newton told her? i don’t know, but i imagined that part of Bella, i just have no clue what her face looks like lol

      • TeamSeth

Is that why they made her hair kind of reddish highlights in NM?

        • sweetinator88

          yeah i think so

      • TeamSeth

hehe, I just remembered that’s when Eddie is spying on her from the nearby wood. I just imagine him as Bothered hanging from a tree, salivating radiator fluid venom, maybe pinching his nipple. Maybe that’s just me. And then we cut to the scene where she can’t read her books because “Edmund was close enough to Edward”… and she falls asleep and he creeps up to see why she threw down the book with such haste. CREEPER

        • sweetinator88

          HAHAHA omg!

“I just imagine him as Bothered hanging from a tree, salivating radiator fluid venom, maybe pinching his nipple.”

          WIN!

i’m officially in love with your imagination

    • BreakingTheEclipse

No truer words were ever spoken!!  I thought the exact same thing about those picks for Carlisle and Emmett were wayyyy off.  So was what’s-her-name as Bella.  No.  But that chick from “She’s All That” as Alice?  Hells yes!

Anywho also I’d like to say that I also saw the same things when picturing Edward and I thought Bella’s clumsy and irrational side did not shine in the movies at all.

And is no one else upset that BD is going to be freaking 2 parts!?  Does anyone over at Summit realize how long we’ve been waiting for this next installment?  And then to stop the movie mid-way, probably just after Bella realizes she’s preggers?  Damn, that is like being Twi-Balled.

      Just sayin’.

      • Anonymous

I hate the wait inbetween, but know they couldn’t covering enough in one
        movie.
I think the first movie will break right after the birth scene, and the
second one will pick up as she comes to as a new vampire.

  • gizmo

Oh hai face-in-a-hole, I have one too. #normal
Also, I tell everyone that someone else made it for me.

The thing about Bella for me is that I first saw the movie, then read the books so I never really thought about who else might have played her. BUT, when I read FF I definitely don’t imagine the Stew as Bella. Ron yes. Bella is always very blurry to me. She’s more like an outline. Weird. I get more fixated on the authors’ wardrobe selections for B.

    • sw_twi_fan

I have the similar feelings as you, except I don’t see Rob in the FF also. I read the books before the movies, so anything I read about E/B is like what you wrote – blurry, outline.
There was a mention of Henry Cavill (yummy) here. You can see him in a Dunhill Black ad on Youtube. He could be playing one of the many dom successful businessman FF Edwards.

  • superhumanmoron

Nice picks, Meyer. That’s a whole lotta pretty!

  • gizmo

Oh, I’ve just seen the video. Like her Jasper choice very much.
And sigh, Henry. I still don’t know why they discarded that idea. He wasn’t that old. I mean, if Dylan McKay had passed as a high school student I don’t’t see why Henry wouldn’t.
Not feeling her Bella choices, though.

    • Anonymous

Yes, I think her Jasper pick was my favorite.

    • Anonymous

After all, Rob is now 24 almost 25, and he is still playing Edward. At the time, they didn’t know for sure they would be doing all the sequels, so it could have been OK to cast an actor that age.

      • MariaCecilia

But have you seen Henry in the Tudors? He would have been towering over KStew like a bloody Hulk! Somehow I put him more in the Emmet category…barring his devastating good looks of course. And I agree: Jasper was an excellent choice, angular, broody, bad boy..

  • Anonymous

About three things I am absolutely certain.(sorry always happens with 3)
First, Esme and Carlisle look waaay to young.
Secondly, the Smallville guy is noooo Emmet
And lastly, Rosalie as a blonde! Who’d have thought?!

    • TeamSeth

Your smallville comment made me think of the chick who is blonde and plays the girl who likes him but they’re just friends (Chloe? I haven’t seen smallville since season 2) Someone like that could be a decent bella. Not like she wasn’t wearing a wig the whole time anyway, right?

      • Anonymous

That’s too funny that you mentioned Chloe. Rumor has it she’s my doppleganger! I also get Kimmi Gibler from Full House, so you know I’m not really sure what that all means. Just thought I’d share! lol

        • TeamSeth

Do you wear 2 scrunchies in your half up/half down side ponytail?

          • Anonymous

I like to twist 2 together to make one beautiful multi-colored one!

  • operarose

Without being a Krisbian or a Robstener, can I say that I actually like Kristen playing Bella? Sure… it’s not like she’s the greatest actress the world has ever know. (Who is? Meryl Streep? Dame Judy Dench? The insane but fabulous Helena Bonham Carter? Oooh, I bet she could have done a rocking Bella back in her day. Anyways…) I saw Into the Wild long before I even read Twilight and Kristen didn’t make me stop and think, OMG, that odd hippie girl was played by such a mind-numbingly amazing actress!

But Kristen is respectful of Bella as a character and becomes her on screen. I think she fits into the role nicely and I know many of you poke fun of her batty eyelashes but honestly they never bothered me until I started to read LTT. Believe it or not, I don’t think her chemistry with Edward – I mean Rob – on screen is all that great (isn’t that ironic)… I think she does better, onscreen, as an actress, with Taylor. But besides that, there’s very little that she does that I don’t like on screen as Bella.

There are so many actresses that really get on my nerves (I won’t name names, mostly they’re on TV though) so I am grateful Bella isn’t being played by one of them.

    • TippyL

I feel like I could have written this. I am not a Kristen fan (and definitely not a Robstener) but she annoys me least when she’s in character. To me she’s done a fine job as being Bella.

I also agree that her chemistry with Rob is off. Her chemistry with him in Twilight was very good – exactly how I pictured when reading. But since they’ve become a couple, I think their chemistry has gone downhill. I always think of Joey Tribiani on Friends saying if they’re doing it in real life, the chemistry will suck! He’s right!

      • Anonymous

I too thought that their chemistry was off in E. But after re-reading BD I remembered something. He’s a vampire and she’s human!! I think for me I got use to Bella and Ed being normal I forgot that they still had this main killing you issue. I’m hoping that’s what they were trying to pull off. The true test will be the Cottage scenes when they both can do the deed without having to think about all the logistics!

        • operarose

We shall soon see how they fare onscreen in BD. But I think TippyL is onto something… if the actors have a real-life romance, it seems to have a negative effect on their onscreen chemistry. If I think of the most smoldering on-screen romances in movies and TV shows, I don’t think any of those actors were romantically linked in real life. (Kate and Leo, Richard Gere & Julia Roberts, more recently Kurt and Blaine, and like I said even Kristen and Taylor are convincing in their angst-filled relationship.) Maybe the only exception was Brad and Angelina?

          • TeamSeth

I think that perhaps it has to do w/ before, during, after. Like Brad and Angelina (when did they hook up?) were good together and that’s when it began (sexy times that is). Like David Tennant and Sophia Myles. In the Doctor Who episode they starred in together, their chemistry was out of control amazing. Then they began dating (I think–I’m kind of suck at following celebrity gossip, as a disclaimer here). So, if that’s how they met, then that film will be hot. I.e. Twilight “I just wanna try one thing”.. then NM was all… Say it, out loud. Say it! “Boyfriend.”

          • TeamSeth

Also, see Anna Paquin and Steven Moyer.

          • TeamSeth

            (oops, that’s a reverse example)

      • TeamSeth

Now that I’ve watched NM for the 800th time and Twilight for the 15th time, I have come to decide that the reason her chemistry sucks with Edward (er, rob) is because the directors were men. I know that sounds lame, but it’s like… I don’t know. In twilight they’re SO awesome. Fun, sexy, grins, CLEARLY like each other… and then in NM it’s like BAM we’re holding onto one another, but no one’s smiling.

Though, when one rereads the books, you can actually see that their chemistry changes. it’s like after Edward leaves and then returns, Bella isn’t the same. She claims that it was like the hole never existed, but both of them are scarred… forever. No matter what they want to say, she had let part of him go and replaced it with Jacob, and no matter how much she wants to be with Edward forever and super duper loves him and really it’s only her egg that’s in love with Jacob, no, she has given part of herself to him… not even… more than that, Jacob has help her rebuild herself, which means they’re tied as one whole unit. And Edward never, ever had that with her. She really, truly should be closer to Jacob than Edward. I understand why she goes with Edward at the end of all things, and it makes sense, but if Jacob is the sun, the reason she shines again with Edward is because Jacob gave him part of his light when he rebuilt her. Edward is the moon, only viewable when lit by the sun. Edward may make the tides move, but Jacob brings life.

(okay, whoa. I’m like tweed serious need to calm down and go eat some sushi lunch today)

        • Anonymous

Jacob is her sun, but Edward is the missing puzzle piece. The time with Jacob while Edward was gone definitely changed things with her and Edward, but he still completes her.

As for the movies, Rob even said after the first movie all of a sudden everyone had an opinion on how they kissed and were constantly redirecting them. They definitely capture too much of the serious and not enough of their light fun side.

          • TeamSeth

I don’t know… I think becoming a vampire and having a larger family is the missing puzzle piece. Edward’s just the enabler.

          • Anonymous

*GASP!* TS, You’ve reduced Edward to a gateway drug…

So wait, are you saying that Edward is Bella’s gateway drug of choice?

        • Bubs

So have to agree with your summation of the whole Bella/Jacob senario. Personally I LOVE SM’s writing whenever she does it from Jacob’s point of view but then again I’m not one of those girls who view themselves as Bella. I so feel for poor Jacob, he STILL hasn’t “got the girl of his dreams” [either one] yet. It’s all about THE BOOKS for me.

Having said that, Kristen’s acting in The Cake Eaters blew me away. How did she get so thin ???? So possibly it has a LOT to do with the script/director. Can’t imagine anyone else as Bella now.

Henry Cavill as Edward-yummmm-but Rob can act – thought he nailed it in the Twilight restaurant scene and Eclipse tent scene. Mind you in both he appeared to be free of white makeup [finally !!! hasn't anyone noticed he's English and "pale" anyway ?]. Otherwise, all he has [or seems ] to do, is grimace through most of the movies. Melissa Rosenberg I blame you for that !!!

On a happier note…Rob is coming to the Sydney premier of Water For Elephants….I might just join the thousands of other “fans” and line the Red Carpet to see if he’s as “handsome” as Kristen says he is.

          • operarose

I forgot about Henry Cavill! That would have worked so well. I bet Stephenie saw him in the I Capture the Castle movie… if you watch that, you will definitely see Edward. (At least the Edward that existed before Rob came around). But by 2008, he was too old to do the role, unfortunately. Henry c. 2003 in I Capture the Castle was perfect.

You are also right that Rob nailed the Eclipse tent scene.

You must go to the premiere and report back!

        • cosi bella

          That was really lovely TS!

    • TeamSeth

I think she does better, onscreen, as an actress, with Taylor

Just like Bella does better with Jake in the books? Ahem. Well, until he goes all pissy puppy on her. That’s so annoying. You’re not a Lockwood, Jacob!

      • Stacey

You just made me miss Mason Lockwood…AGAIN. Now that’s a werewolf.

Now Jacob and Tyler (VampDi) can have the ultimate who’s a crankier werewolf contest. They can whine at each to death.

      • Bubs

        What’s a Lockwood ??? Sorry I’m an Aussie…..never heard that expression before.

        • TeamSeth

It’s a reference to Vampire Diaries. The Lockwoods (more or less) are werewolves.

          • Bubs

Thanks. Haven’t got to V. Diaries yet-still re-reading Twilight’s for the umptheenth time-not ready to give up my Twicrack addiction yet – having only read them for the first time last March [Happy Anniversary to me !]. I figure life’s too short to not do what makes you happy :-].

          • TeamSeth

I’ve not read VampDi either, I just watch the show :) They are apparently rather different from one another.

    • MariaCecilia

I thought both Kristen and Rob were excellent choices once I saw Twilight, and I thought their chemistry was really good. Then I saw NM and thought that the best part was Bella’s relationship with Jake: Edward was suddenly middleaged and tweed serious, Bella was jumpy and brooding and their chemistry was gone. Sigh. Eclipse – okay, better, but still stiff and a bit awkward, and I DON’T think that that’s in the book. Still love them, though. Always will.

I must say that I didn’t disrespect Kristen’s blinking until I saw her in interviews and noticed that she was being Bella all the time, while Rob was nothing like Edward. (I’m keeping an open mind about Kristen’s talents until she has done something completely different, though, like period drama.)

      • ladyofthemeadow

I was okay with Kristen’s blinking too, but if she does it in any other movie, it will drive me nuts and I will have no respect for her as an actress.

Period drama, now that would be interesting to see her do.

    • ladyofthemeadow

Oh, yeah. Helena Bonham Carter would have been a great Bella, in her day. I still love her.

      • operarose

Actually, I recently watched A Room with a View and she really did look like she could have played Bella back then.

  • debbiedoo89

To me,too, Kristen is Bella. I loved her in “Into the Wild”. When my teenage daughter told me she was cast as Bella, I could see it. Then she told me that Cedric Diggory would be Edward and my concern was how the beauty of the vampires would come across onscreen. No problem for Rob there!!!!

  • Suzyb49

I’m not crazy about how Edward and Bella are betrayed in the movies. I’m not sure it’s Kristen or Rob’s fault but they are just too angsty with none of the humor and happy times they have in the books. She takes the whole thing of him being a vampire too calmly according to Edward in that drivel called Midnight Sun that I would never want to read another word of if you paid me. In the movies it’s like they are in constant torture being together.

I’m so hoping they “lighten up” in Breaking Dawn at least for the wedding and honeymoon before they get all angsty about the mutant spawn.

That being said they are Edward and Bella to me. (except I actually know that in RL they aren’t so I wouldn’t ask them Queen Latifah questions if I ever ran into them) I read the books after they were cast. My daughter had the Twilight movie poster on her wall and I didn’t know either of them as actors at the time so they were who I pictured.

This time of year is nostalgic for me since I read the books for the 1st time 2 years ago in March :)

    • Nelle

Me too. But it was one year ago.

      • ladyofthemeadow

        Me too! One year ago!

    • ThinWildMercury

Which is why a young Helena Bonham Carter would’ve been perfect for the role. The perfect balance of angst, humour, feistiness and sexual tension.

      • ThinWildMercury

I meant that as a reply to R/K being too angsty as E/B…

  • apple

That’s funny, I also thought of Alexis Bledel immediately ^^

  • kt

Emily Browning. For. Shore. She is almost exactly the Bella I pictured when I was reading the books.

  • cosi bella

    I love Kristen as Bella.

I prefer SM’s choice for Esme.

Who’s they guy who SM picked for Carlisle? For me Carlisle HAS to be Peter Fach. But when I saw her choice for him I actually thought he would make a delicious Edward!!

    • S.kay

I agree about Carlisle. To me, Peter is perfect! And Kellan as Emmett as well. SM’s other choices weren’t bad.

I don’t mind KStew but I read the books after she already had the part, so that is how I always pictured her.

      • Anonymous

When I read Carlisle, I still see Jude Law in my head.

        • Anonymous

Wow, I never even thought of him as Carlisle. I mean, I love P-Fach, but Jude Law? Double yum.

        • Anonymous

Yah, Peter F. as Carlisle is not bad, but he looks too…friendly. Jude Law would certainly give Carlisle more raw sex appeal.

        • Anonymous

Jude would make a fabulous vampire!

          • Anonymous

            Yes, Jude Law – Yum!

        • TeamSeth

When I think, I still see Jude Law in my head. ;)

        • JustGoWithIt

Too old though. Jude Law so looks over 30. And can you imagine him with a blond wig? Funny….but not sexy.

      • missmiller

I hate to share because then you’ll all be writing letters to Charlie, but SM’s pick for Carlisle is Charlie Hunnam and can be seen on Sons of Anarchy on FX in the fall (in the states anyway)

    • JustGoWithIt

      Me too.

    • Yesjayme

Charlie Hunnam is awesome. He plays Jax on Sons of Anarchy and I adore him. I can’t picture him in Twilight though; not after his turn as biker dude Jax. Mmmmmmmm…

  • natalie_MKH

I cannot WAIT for the made-for-tv movie versions!!!!!

  • Krissie

To be perfectly honest, when I read the books, I thought of myself as Bella and some male model dudes as Edward and Jacob.

Because I knew that would never happen, I was rooting for Emily Browning. She had the look and the acting chops to do it, but uncertain about what her chemistry would be like with Rob.

I just wish that Kristen would not be so much like Bella in real life, it would be nice to get a actress who played gloomy but in real life kinda more upbeat about life.

P.S.-The thought of Kat Dennings ever being considered makes me glad Kristen got the part, talk about horrible acting. She’s the worst.

    • Anonymous

I saw myself as her too. Just a slightly shorter, longer haired, brown-eyed, and less well dressed version of myself. I think that is the beauty of the books, almost anyone can see themselves as Bella.

      • Anonymous

Very true. When UC asked if there were any American brunettes we were overlooking I thought ME ME!

      • Anonymous

Oh, and a more flannel wearing version of myself. Forgot to add that. Because Bells is ALL about that never-ending flannel.

      • JustGoWithIt

I even went into an inner dialogue comparison between Edward and a high school boyfriend I had. He was tall and handsome (at least I thought so, he reminded me of Kurt Cobain, in 1993/4 that was nuff said). I had a crush on him after kissing him during a game of spin the Snapple bottle half filled with peach tea and rum, instead of it being a nothing kiss like I expected it was actually hot. I didn’t think he’d ever like me, but he did. He was super what the kids would now call emo, with his healed up razor cuts all up and down his arms covered by long sleeves. He told me he loved me right away and would write poems for me and would not sleep with me on account of keeping my virtue intact (or so it went at the time, who knows really). Of course the comparison stops there, but like I said, my mind went there.

    • ladyofthemeadow

I totally saw myself as Bella, the one who unexpectedly ended up with the high school handsome unattainable boy and doubted herself for it. He didn’t bite me, we didn’t have sex (what a waste) and I didn’t marry him, though. And I don’t look or act like Bella, I just FELT like Bella, which made Twilight my personal kind of heroin.

  • Anonymous

Does anyone else think that SM’s choice for Bella looks a lot like SM? Yes, we all (most) see a little of ourselves in Bella.

    • TeamSeth

I do think she looks like SM.

But… I never saw myself as Bella. I’m too vain and selfish and not really clumsy and I like to dress sexy when I go to events and really smoking hot guys are kind of a turn off for me due to bad past experiences. I guess I’m more of a Jessica, but less fickle and with better self-esteem. Anyway…I think I’m a rare one with that “don’t relate to bella at all” thing.

    • JustGoWithIt

I’m just glad they didn’t go with #1 choice Edward, he did nothing for me. I think Kristen did a great job by insisting on Rob, for so many of us “perfect” doesn’t do it. Ya need some character. A face that you don’t forget while you’re still looking at it. I thought Nikki Reed was a strange choice for Rosalie, but I did like how they mixed it up in the casting so not ever single character was Caucasian. And she gives great bitch face.

  • Anonymous

Why limit it to brunette actresses? Obviously that was Ms. Hardwicke’s very last concern: Kellan–blonde–dyed black, PFach–brunette–dyed blonde, NikkiR–brown–dyed blonde, etc. No one had their natural hair or (eye-) color except maybe Rob, who I think had henna highlights, and had black Dali hair when he auditioned.
To be honest, I don’t pay enough attention to young actresses, blonde or brunette or whatever, to know enough to have a preference. I think Kristen did just fine for the level of movie that Twilight was at the time, and she insisted on Rob, so it’s all good.

Not a wig. There are pictures of him around the time of Little Ashes/Twilight auditions with the stringy black hair and wearing the most hideous sweater. Creepy Uncle Rob they call him over on LTR.

        • TeamSeth

ew. How can you people think he’s hot?!

          • Anonymous

Funny, that’s what Rob asks, too.

          • TeamSeth

“And I said well that’s the one thing we’ve got”

          • Anonymous

I think Rob is hot. Not Rob with his Salvador Dali haircut and color!!

    • MariaCecilia

Why limit it to American, brunette actresses indeed! What’s wrong with, for instance, Scandinavian, brunette teachers if I may ask?
No, seriously, I thought Kristen was a good choice for the part, real hair or not and her biggest contribution was definitely believing in Rob’s magicness! I am unsure if I could have pulled that off myself with any confidence during Rob’s Creepy-Uncle-period…

This is uhh difficult as Kristen and Bella are one in the same; therefore, the stuttering Oscar unworthy mess would be rather challenging to replace. But I’ll give it a go.. Minka Kelly, Camilla Belle, Nina Dobrev, Emmy Rossum, , Lucy Hale, Selena Gomez, Emily Browning, Hayden Panettiere, Amanda Seyfried, Mila Kunis, Emma Roberts.. just to name a few

    • Anonymous

Camilla maybe, Nina, definitely. Selena would have been good but she was too young when they first cast.

    • JustGoWithIt

Emma Roberts, that could have worked. I think Bella needed to be someone with an off beat kind of beauty. Not someone with obvious exotic looks or the big eyed and lipped kind of beauty Amanda Seyfried or Emmy Rossum have. Not that Emma Roberts doesn’t have big lips, but her beauty if def. less main stream pages of Maxim than say Minka Kelly.
I think generally KStew’s not Dinsey school of acting career made her a good Bella. She does mumble and stutter a lot..but it comes off natural enough. I could picture Selena Gomez as a cute Bella, but watcher her try to be shy and awkward and pouty might have been excruciating. Also, Bella doesn’t think she is anything special to look at, that would have come off so so annoying if she looked like a beauty queen or had a Disney Princess perfect dimpled smile, you know.

I am so glad to find other so-called nonstens here. I personally don’t like KSpew as an actress or in real life.

I read the books after I saw Twilight and I still can’t picture her as Bella although she did somewhat good in the first movie. I just don’t think that she can pull off the Bella in the books. For one thing you never see her cry on screen and she cries all of the time in the books.

The chemistry between her and Rob is ok in the movies but I think he would be better suited with someone else. (I thought the chemistry between him and Emilie in Remember Me was GREAT.) They picked the perfect actor for Edward but they could have done a better job in casting Bella. Also I think that their so-called relationship off-screen is fake because Summit just wants to make money off of it. They may have dated but after the TCA’s this year its clear that that is no longer happening and I for one couldn’t be happier about it. He deserves someone better.

    • MariaCecilia

Actually, I have a secret dream about seeing Rob acting with Ellen Page (from Inception and Juno) – she definitely has the feisty down for Bella, but unfortunately I think she is too pretty for the part. But I would love to see them on, say SNL together – I am sure they could ad lib some pretty weird skits together..

  • Nelle

I have mixed feelings about KStew as an actress. I find her annoying a lot – the mumbling. But I think there were two scenes in New Moon- the leaving scene (I felt it so much I almost had a panic attack) and the last scene with Jacob- that were Oscar-worthy. Seriously. And unfortunately I do think Rob loves her so that’s that. I just hope she treats him right in private!

  • gizmo

Oh yeah, forgot to say that I always thought had Twilight come out in the 90s , Winona Ryder would have been Bella, no doubt. She’d be a perfect B. And Johhny as E of course. And we’d still be talking about it.

    • cosi bella

      Winona Rider – yes!!!

  • TeamSeth

    YOU’RE A NONSTEN?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    But onto relevant things:
Book Bella, “my Bella”, is soooo not Kristen. Book Bella is way cooler than how Kristen portrays her, but still dazzled all the time. Book Bella is stronger willed, more head strong, more compassionate, and more stupid. And also suuuuper annoying in books 2 & 3. But, my Book Edward is NOT RPattz either. And it NEVER EVER will be. I’m lucky in a way… even though I read the books AFTER seeing Twilight the movie (4 times) (in the theater) (thanks, sis), I still have my own characters in my head. And any time I’ve gone back to reread, they just pop up that way. Even Charlie isn’t Billy Burke. (sad, I know) and Felix and Dimitri are actually super scary instead of hot, and the three Volturi heads are much older looking, and Caius is like EVIL. And he has super white hair and Marcus never talks. And the Romanians are older too. Sigh. The books are so much better. Oh well.

  • guest

Every time I read the books- it is always a confirmation to me that Kristen Stewart is Bella. And, after seeing Red Robin Hood- OMG- so glad Shiloh Fernandez and Kristen didn’t have chemistry!- We wouldn’t have made it past the first movie. The only thing that trips me up when reading the books vs. the movie is the fact Jacob Black is shorter than Edward- I want to see him tower over Edward- that would have brought a different energy to the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob debate. Really Kristen Stewart is the perfect Bella- Stephanie Meyer was writing with her in mind- she just didn’t know it.

Late to the party… I began reading the books just after NM premiered. So the images of the chosen actors were already out there. But I never see any of the actors’ portrayals in my mind when I’m reading the books. Like many of the actresses mentioned, Kristen ‘looks’ like how Bella could look. And the same is true for Rob as Edward. Admittedly, Kristen wouldn’t have been my final choice as Bella. I’m meh about her portrayal… and it stems from her fidgeting twitches that don’t seem to fit Bella from the books. The fidgeting is a Kristen thing, not a Bella thing. She always seems uncomfortable; while Bella seems at peace, an old soul. As for other choices… Alexis Bledel is also very Bella-like… still like original choice Emma Browning… out on a limb choice Carey Mulligan… or Ellen Page… or maybe even Rooney Mara. About Edward… after watching the Tudors, I can see why Stephenie had Henry Cavill on the short list for Edward. Then there’s Hayden Christensen (however he’s even older than Henry).

ClevverTV has some suggestions on YouTube for recasts, too.

  • Stacey

I saw the movie before reading the books, so I imagined those actors in my head. I think they all did a passable job. Some issues might be due to, you know, the script. While some of the funniest lines were intentionally hilarious.

Kristen’s fine as Bella. Rory from Gilmore Girls would just be Rory to me. That’s just because I love that show. I can’t even watch Luke on any other show without yelling out, “Get back to Lorelei and the diner!”

You know who would gave made an excellent Alice? Ginnifer Goodwin from Big Love. Whenever I see her character Margene, I think that is so Alice in some scenes.

Kristen is NOT my book Bella, although she resembles her in features, Bella is a little more spunky than Kristen is able to pull off. Fine, we get what we get, but I would have enjoyed watching Alexis Bledel…if I could forget for an hour and a half she’s a Gillmore Girl. lol Truth though, I don’t think anyone could have survived these past scripts…no matter who it was. Kristen did her best so far in Twilight…and I hope Bill forces her to be happier in BD. Seeing E&B smiling and loving will be nice! Thank goodness Rob takes over all my thoughts during each movie, that I’d still go stand in line at midnight just to see him! ♥ It’s nuts, I know!

  • Merlinmerlot

I’m surprised no one has checked out the archives on Stephanie’s website; you can find that TomStu was high on her list of picks for Edward.

    • TeamSeth

      Because he’s sooo Sparta.

  • Alisheeba

I can never picture anybody else but Kristen, just like UC, Kristen is Bella to me I just can’t fit any other face, and the akward acting just brings it home for me because Bella is akward!

  • sweetinator88

yeah soo idk about you guys but im pretty sure i didnt imagine bella at all… at least i dont think she really had a face…

i cant remember for sure, but i think that ‘Bella’ for me was sort of like a blank space in which my consciousness was placed…
which makes sense to me, because i was reading it from her mind, sooo yeah haha

    did that make sense?

heck i might have imagined her but my memory is so bad that NOW its just like a blank space hahaha who knows?

  • Sagalvr

Kristen looks like what I pictured Bella to be, but plays her way too tough. She convinced me she was Joan Jett (in the Runaways) or Emily (in Adventureland) WAY sooner than nurturing, domestic, kind Bella. If she could channel Olivia de Havilland as Melanie in Gone With the Wind, it would be closer to how I relate to my loving book Bells :)

    • TeamSeth

      Aw Melanie! So true!

  • Stuckinbook

Is it bad that I don’t know who most of the guys in that video are? To answer my own question, YES, because they’re hot.
As for casting… I was going through a major Gossip Girl phase when I read Twilight, so Leighton Meester was Bella. Yep. Blake Lively was Rosalie. Chace Crawford was Jasper… but Rob was still Edward.

  • Madelynn

Well despite being a Kristen fan, I think Jena Malone would have been good as Bella.. what do you guys think? (Stepmom, Saved, Into The Wild…uummm look her up!..she rocks) I don’t picture Kristen when I read the books tho…but there is no one out there that fits the image in my head, unfortunatley.

  • missllindz

HATE KS. Always have! Shes just TOO awkward. Even for Bella… and Bella is pretty but in a very natural way. So here are my top three people. Based on the face that they do have very natural beauty and are pretty ok at acting, I mean they are not Natlie (whom I worship lol) but they do alright, also I will list something they’ve played in.

-Sasha Pieterse (with brown hair): Alison dilaurentis; Pretty Little Liars

-Lucy Hale: Aria Montgomery; Pretty Little Liars AND Effie, Sisterhood of the travling pants 2

-Emma Roberts: lots of stuff but what makes me think of Bella is Emma’s role as Nancy Drew, shes awkward (but not KS awkward) and naturaly pretty. Sadly I really don’t think her Voice would match my minds version of Bella… hmm. Idk.

Any way. I also Like this Emily B girl that Steph Mayer picked.

I just really don’t think KS is a good actress. I just don’t “believe” that she is bella. All I see is Kristen. and an actress has to pull you in and make you believe they are that person.

Look at Nat Portman (worship) Ever see “Where the heart is” ? Where she plays a clueless country girl… and then a crazed ballerina in black swan…and then a awkward doctor that totally gets down with Ashton Kutcher…Jealous (of him ;]) and not once did I think of her past characters. KS. I can’t even think of her as the character she’s playing when shes playing them.

    anyways… so yeah. :]

  • Derpina Herpina

Um…your not that pretty lol no offense so your out of the question. But I definitely wanted Emily browning to play as Bella. Plus she’s a pretty good actress compared to that bulldog Stewart but my own opinion

  • Bella Rios

We’ll Emily browning should have been Bella Swan she plain she has brown hair and she’s pretty.I heard so many mean comments about Kristen Stewart. She a good actress, I don’t know why people hate her that much. But Kristen Stewart playing Bella well of course not.Robert Pattinsom playing Edward of course yes! But Kristen shouldn’t haven’t gotten the role. Oh well the movies are already made and it’s over.
