Are there any 2011 Newbies?

UC Moon Stephenie Meyer

THIS is kinda a big deal....

Dear Twilight,

Last week it came up in conversation with some new friends that I run a Twilight blog. I bashfully said “Yes it’s true.. I write a blog about that vampire love story” and my friend quickly jumped in to say “But, UC, tell them all about it- Tell them how it’s kind of a big deal & how you met the author and everything” And I bashfully said “Yes.. Yes.. I met the author… I’m kinda a big deal” (Just kidding) So I was answering questions about what we do here at LTT & the new friend (a male) was really interested. Like a little too interested for a 33 year old father of 4, and it just reminded me of a year or so ago when that very conversation was more prevalent. At this point most people know about LTT (even though I’ve still never made LTT public in my life. No matter how many times my grandmother asks what the blog address is..) so it’s been awhile since I’ve had to explain WHAT it is we do here and WHY.

That got me thinking: What happens to the people who are just discovering Twilight now? Remember when you first found LTT, how RELIEVED you were that you weren’t alone in loving the story, despite it’s many, hilarious flaws? Can you imagine FINALLY giving in after hearing about Twilight for all these years, obsessing like crazy as everyone does over the books and then watching the 3 movies before slipping into a deep “it’s over” depression? What do they do next? Where do they begin? They’d probably Google Rob Pattinson like most of us did, and after watching 10 videos straight… then what? Text the friend who begged them to read the saga all these years and say:

OMG! There is this video where Kristen picks something out of Rob’s teeth and he goes “Yummy!” Do you think they’re together? It seems like it- I have to confess I watched this hour-long video of the behind the scenes filming of some photo-shoot. You HAVE to check it out!

Um, old news… like 2008 old news! How lonely must it be for new Twilight lovers- the newbies of 2011!!

See you at Youth Group Sunday?

Imagine the day when they come across old Twilight archives on some entertainment website & read that Kellan Lutz calls “A Purpose Driven Life” one of his favorite books. Who is there to laugh along with them when they put two and two together & figure out Kellan’s just a good ol’ boy from the youth group?

And imagine the disappointment of a Twilight newbie who finds out Kristen & Nikki are bff’s forever & then starts to come across pictures where the two girls are no longer together- or worse they’re in the same picture but on opposite sides! Or Nikki’s bitchface is showing. Did their fake lesbian-ship fall apart? Who/What/When/Where did that happen? Can you imagine trying to figure out what went wrong THERE 2 years after the fact (Newbies the short answer is: Nikki f*cked Rob, Rob f*cked Kristen, Nikki married some American Idol dude)

Who is there for the 2011 newbie when they cry after discovering 100 Monkeys? I can imagine it now: One night there’s some heavy research being done on Jackson because “he’s pretty cute.” Blah blah blah “he was on The OC.” Blah blah blah “he was a she-male on Criminal Minds.” Blah blah- “Music!? Nice! I love a guy with a guitar…” Pushes play on the music player. “AHHH What IS this? Why is blood pouring out of my ears? Why do I suddenly want all monkeys to die? Make it stop!” Ugh- how horrible to go through that alone!

Buttcrack Santa Tequila Tomas

Buttcrack Santa with an old friend I forgot about TEQUILA TOMAS!

And can you IMAGINE falling in love with the Buttcrack Santa story-line alone!? I mean we’ve known him for so long. We wrote him his very first letter almost a 2 1/2 years ago! He’s such a part of our “normal” life (as much as an old dude with his buttcrack showing is normal.) These days we barely even think about him (sorry Waylon! We’ll get on that. I do miss you). Or what about the day the newbie comes across a picture of Taylor and his dad & Laughs out LOUD at the picture- there’s this fit, young jacked guy & well, Big Daddy. Who has a lot of ‘lovin’ to go around if you know what I mean!

I can’t imagine what it’s like for 2011 newbies. Maybe there aren’t any- or at least any as dedicated as us. I’m not trying to say we’re better- I don’t think that for one second- I’m not a “old school Twilighter” by any means since I discovered the books a week before Breaking Dawn was released (thank GOD! I can’t imagine waiting!) I just mean- are we so dedicated because we’ve had awhile with the saga? We’ve come to love these things slowly- first the books, then the movies. Then we loved the characters of the movies- then the actors & finally their random family & friend connections…. Has all this time & “experiences” we’ve had with the story/characters/actors & players shaped our love? Or are there dedicated fans still jumping on board even these days….. all alone out there, wondering how to belong!?

I hope new people find Twilight. And then I hope they find LTT so we can let them in on our secret: That’s Normal. Yes, all of it. (Well, most of it. Or maybe like three quarters of it. Or maybe just the parts of it that we agree are normal. How’s that?)

Still Normal, even after all these years,
UnintendedChoice

Do you think people are still finding Twilight in 2011 & loving it with this deep obsessive affection? What other things/people/storylines would be hard to fall in love with on your own!? PS: I miss Tequila Tomas

A couple of weeks ago my father-in-law mentioned to me that he had watched the movies. Knowing that I am a (reluctant) fan, he started asking questions. Naturally, I suggested the books and promised to bring my set when I visited again.

So, this past weekend we have our chat. While he won’t reveal his Team alligance, he did say he was really looking forward to the next movie. I said I would save a seat when I see it with the ladies from work.

I read the books the week Twilight was released in the theaters. (Fantastic timing!) Shortly thereafter, I made my husband read them. I also introduced my boss to Edward and she hasn’t looked back since. BUT never in a million years would I have thought I would be discussing the finer points of Twilight with my retired policeman father-in-law. Ever.

    • Vanessa Nobre

Oh God, I could never make my husband read the book! I’m happy that I made him watch the movies! He said he was going to read cosmopolis but hasn’t yet… I don’t think he’s a very good twi-hubby…

      • Anonymous

That actually does count as a good twi-hubby, according to me anyway. There are husbands out there that have read all the books, knowingly participated in leg hitching, made jokes about Twi that don’t involve the words “pathetic” and “so sad” (or what my husband does by now when I make a Twilight related comment, just pretend it didn’t happen), but they are few and far between. If yours watched the movies and participate in Rob Lit, he is a good twi-hubby.

        • Anonymous

My hubby did make one funny/not negative Twilight related comment. I don’t remember the exact context, but he said something about Rob being handsome. I’ll take it.
The one time I asked him if he was even a little curious what all the fuss was about, reminding him all the books are just sitting there on the shelf, he said something like “Are you curious about what all the fuss is about with the video games I play?” i.e. Bioshock and the like. Point taken. No, I am not. They are sitting available for me to play, he loves them, and my curiosity is 0 out of 10.

ha ha. good analogy. Minecraft is…building things out of cubes? that’s great sweetie. totally normal to spend hours building…uh. cube houses that don’t really exist. :)

          • Anonymous

Yes, playing a creepy monster/zombie/ghoul shoot um’ up video game (that give you nightmares) until 1 in the morning even though you have to get up at 6 is soooo normal.

LOL Minecraft is big in our house too!

      • MariaCecilia

I am content that I have made my husband read “Jane Eyre” and “Pride and Prejudice” when we met…these days he hardly ever picks up a novel, so I don’t think I’ll ever get him to read Twilight for me..*sigh* And I am still trying to hide the fact why I’ve been reading “Bel Ami”, “Water for Elephants” and “Cosmopolis” from him..wouldn’t want him to think I’m (R)obsessed or anything…

        • Anonymous

Have you tried Bribery?  I don’t think that would work on my husband either, like it does on my kids.

    • MariaCecilia

You’re so lucky to have these people in your life! And you get extra Twi-points for practically having Charlie for a father-in-law! Does he watch Mariner games and enjoy Vitamin R, I wonder? :-)

  • Abcoolie

Too funny! I was just laughing at a FB “friend” (you know, someone who is the daughter of a friend of my mom) who has been posting all week about reading the books. Guess she finished BD last night and was lamenting this morning about what she was going to do next. I was tempted to DM her and give her some hints, but didn’t really want to out myself to someone I hadn’t seen in 10 years. She’s a smart girl. She’ll find LTT, LTR, etc. We all did. :-)

    • MariaCecilia

Send her an anonymous letter tipping her off about LTT/LTR with letters cut out from a newspaper and sign it “Edward”. She’ll love that…

      • TeamSeth

        Dear Normal Bella,

We need to chat. Well, maybe not.  Perhaps I will just give you the name of the secret paradise. It’s called Letters to Twilight.  I realize that it sounds like Twi-Crazies who buy nipple clamps and cheese wheels (yes, at the same time) for secondary characters of the saga, but I promise, it’s not.

Give it a whirl. It’s normal.  And cool–like purple.  Half of what I say to you will soon make sense.

        Anticipating learning your new avatar,
        LTT Edward

  • Wendy

Its been so long since I’ve come across a newbie…sigh.  Most everyone is already so decided.  I did make a new Twi-friend recently (the only one I know living in my area)…and I rec’d LTT!  But…she’s a 100 Monkeys fan.  Sigh.

  • Kaybvee

WAIT! Jackson was on The OC? How did I not know this? KB rushes to IMDB.

    • Stacey

I missed that one! Or I was too busy juggling my ogling to Adam Brody and Benjamin McKenzie. (Probably the latter) Must catch up on The Soap Channel or Netflicks.

  • Vanessa Nobre

Oh well I’m a new bee!!! A late 2010 newbie at least! And it’s so lonely in here…  I don’t have any close friends to discuss twilight with… No one I know wanted to read the books… And when you mentioned the nikki-kris situation, oh god so true!!! I Always wondered what really happened but no one explains it to me! :(

    • MariaCecilia

I sympathize with you VN – I am lonesome too! As for what really happened with the fake lesbian BFF affair, I doubt that even those who were fans at the time know…we will just have to wait for Nikki’s memoirs to come out, in another 2-3 years or so..and then hear Kristen go “no comment” on it.. :-)

      • TeamSeth

It’ll be like the awkward radio phone call between her Joan Jett character and Dakota’s Cherie Currie character.

        • Anonymous

This made me start thinking whose memoirs would be the most interesting to read?

  • Anonymous

I’m just patiently waiting for my daughters to become old enough to read and appreciate Twilight. Then I’ll relive the joy and excitement when they discover the amazing thing Twilight is… Don’t disappoint your mother girls… No pressure, girls.

I think the key is timing, though. My sisters let their girls read Twi too young and they didn’t “get” why it was supposed to be so great. They were very “meh” about them. I told them to read it again in a few years and we’ll talk. But in the meantime, I disowned them.

    • Stacey

I have a sneaking feeling that my girl will be more Katniss then Bella. The Hunger Games in that kid is already strong. I won’t let her read either one until she’s at least 16 or 30, because her mommy will have a hard time holding back jokes about feathers and sippy cups o’blood.

We started reading Anne of Green Gables. A chapter a night before bedtime. She’s comprehending most of it, which is great for a 4 year old. I think that ultimately starting her off with the classics (also Little House on the Prairie and Misty of Chincoteague) will be the way to go.

      • Anonymous

What a good mommy you are.  My little book worm 12 yr old is more into fairy stories, not the tinkerbell kind.  Those with brownies, goblins and such.  I am trying to get her to read Anne of Green Gables. I know she would love it.  As for my older daughter, I think I’ve bribed her into reading the Hunger Games. She is not a reader by choice.

    • Anonymous

I am so looking forward to my niece and nephew getting to high school play/musical age and a still devoted TwiTeacher rewrites the whole saga for them to perform. Oh, can you imagine the competition for Bella role! Psychotic cheerleading mums will have nothing on me. And I really hope nephew’s hair changes from blonde to dark brown so he can be in wolfpack.

  • http://adriennetrafford.blogspot.com adrienne

The last newbie I met was over a year ago. She had just discovered Twilight AND Rob.  And I was so been-there-done-that but it was also fun to show her the ropes.

  • MariaCecilia

I am convinced people are still coming late to the party – because whatever the reason is that we all here at LTT more or less obsess about Twilight, I am sure more people have those reasons in their lives too and just haven’t found this outlet yet. (Reasons like “I’m bored with this job”, “I don’t know if I’m still in love with my boyfriend/husband”, “I don’t like the way this turned out”, “I am so exhausted trying to be a good mum!” etc)

It’s wonderful and weird the way Twilight can make you connect with your inner self and bring out the passion and the silliness and connect you to new people. Maybe this is the answer for world peace: just give the leaders of the world a copy of Twilight and they won’t have time to start wars – they’ll be to busy reading LTT and fan fic and bitchin’ on the forum about Robsten vs Nonsten. (Wait, THAT might become the reason to World War 3 right there!!)

    • Anonymous

I love that so many of us feel that way. It is very hard not to prescribe a dose of Twilight to friends going through hard times. I have a heart broken friend that is obviously having some obsessive feelings about several things. I almost brought the books over to her house to leave “anonymously” with an “anonymous” note explaining.

      • Stacey

Twilight saved me from the after labor, lack of sleep doldrums. It was a refreshing distraction from cranky baby and toddler blues :0)

Dear heartbroken and pining for something you can’t have Bella,

Hello, my name is Edward Cullen. Although it might be smart of you to stay away from me, I can’t stay away from you any longer. I hear you’ve been obsessing over this guy that probably doesn’t even still know you are into him. You don’t deserve that. Or at least, if you are going to conduct a relationship all on you own, in your head, let it be with me. Join me in Chapter 1 this evening, please.

          Edward

          • Anonymous

            Dear Edward,

I get that I shouldn’t be into you and that Rob guy probably doesn’t know I exist but please, I like that relationship in my head. Although of course I would prefer it be open and real but since it’s not I guess I could give it a go with you. I hear your pretty cute and that you play piano. Could you just work on your British accent a little?

            Thanks,
            HAPFSYCHB

          • Anonymous

            Dear Edward,

After all this time, I’m still into you. Since this is an entirely imaginary relationship, I can say that without feeling vulnerable putting my feelings out there. I haven’t re-read the books in a while, and I have read fanfic, so I sometimes lose touch with the real imaginary you, sorry about that. It is a touch creepy that my mom also has a bit of a crush on you. I can handle it though, loving you means sharing, that is for sure.

Love Married with Children GoWithIt Bella

I haven’t come across a newbie in a while. I discovered the books in late 09 and was to embarrassed to tell anyone. I was all alone for a while. Although, at the time my husband did go to see New Moon with me in theaters so I wasn’t to alone. He refuses to read the books but has seen all the movies with me LOTS of times. ( I think he secretly enjoys them haha) But when I finally came out of the closet to my friends and begged them to read the books so that I wouldn’t be alone, one of them became just as obsessed as me (thank goodness). She sat in the theatre with me for 6 hours to see Eclipse at midnight and enjoyed every minute of it. Both of us have moved since then and we haven’t talked much but we promise to see BD together. So, I am all alone again and it brings back all the memories from before. The only difference is that I have ya’ll to share my obsession with. I am just glad that I actually comment now instead of just reading what everyone else says. (I read LTT for almost 2 years before commenting). Although, I would love to find newbies, I am just glad that I have all of ya’ll to share my obsession with.

I am at Mr. Slut’s family reunion, somewhere in the mountains of California. During the planning of this extravaganza, I became Facebook friends with his whole extended family, and then one day, a random cousin “liked” one of my Rob-related posts! I was all OMG ARE WE VACATION BFFS NOW?!??! and she said yes. yes we are. And when we finally met (and hugged it out!) she admitted to having a Robert Pattinson ***pillow***. HOLYSHITWOW. Her husband was like, “what are you guys talking about?” *chagrined looks* “Oh. The Pillow.” aaah, new Twi Friends.

Mr. Slut also let out a high pitched squeal when he saw In n Out Burger from the highway (oh sorry. we’re in CA. the “freeway”. whatever.) He misses them in his East Coast exile.  We ate Double Doubles at 10 in the morning. No Rob, sadly.  Maybe on the way back.

And for a question no newbie would be able to answer: Does Wide Awake really end at Chapter 43 with Edwards weird psychotic episode? Is just the fact that he admitted he needs help supposed to let us know everything turned out fine in the end? Because I get that. But is feels weird ending the story with a sleep deprived/drug induced haze. (p.s. Eddie, been there done that, I understand. I once ended up interrupting a friend’s very weird intimate evening by inviting myself over because I had to leave my house because I kept seeing the Hamburglar crouching outside my house by a car eating a hamburger and watching me with a pair of binoculars.)

    • Anonymous

It’s been a while since I read that, but I think the author had some problem with fanfiction.net and stopped posting there, and you have to go to her website to read the rest.

      • Anonymous

I’ll look into it. Though I didn’t find it on FanFic.net in the first place, it was live journal. When the Chapters went into the 40s, I was thinking “what did I get myself into, does this thing ever end?”, but when it ended at 43 with no particular closer I was left wanting more. Just a few. Maybe some happily ever after snickerdoodles? Or we got chapter long dry humps, now we need some More than a busted cherry chocolate chips?

        • Anonymous

Here’s the author’s profile, I think she links to the whole story or a pdf you can download:

Man! I haven’t read Wide Awake, but it’d be kind of cool for it to just end during this psychotic moment with real closing.  Very Darren Aronofsky.

          • TeamSeth

            *no real closing

Last week a friend asked me, “got any suggestions for what book I should take to read on my vacation?”  I went, “Hmm, how do you feel about Young Adult fiction?  I hear The Hunger Games is popular (mind you, I haven’t read it myself).”  She goes, “Hmm, Young Adult?” kinda skeptical.  I could tell she obviously hadn’t been initiated, so I had to be casual so as not to put her off:  “Yeah, do you like supernatural themes?  Have you read, say, Twilight?”  Friend: “Twilight? I think I’ve heard of it.”  Me:  “Oh yes, I can lend it to you, you might like it.”  And inside, I’m going, I can’t believe it!  A virgin! OMG! We shall see what happens!

    • Anonymous

Do tell how that turns out!

    • TeamSeth

I hope this turns into a juicy letter.

Hey, UC, it still boggles my mind that y’all got to get up close and personal with the goddess SM herself!  That picture there is priceless, where she’s doubled over in laughter at your antics!  It actually looks like she’s trying to take a big bite out of Moon’s knee.  I’m so jealous, I want to bite Moon’s knee, too.
    Happy Edward Cullen’s Birthday!

One of my best friends is finally moving back to where I live. I made her promise to come see Breaking Dawn with me. Which means she has to come over and watch all the rest of the movies with me. She has no chance of escaping me forcing her to love Twilight. Plus, she’s pregnant and that’s a great way to reel her in or her prevent her from leaving the viewing party I will be having.

Lucky you.  So far I’ve gotten a friend to read MS.  She has other Twi-friends, so I think if we gang up on her, who knows  :-)

Ha! are you kidding! just today, I’m at the pool with all the other Mommies waiting on swimming-lesson kids, then there’s one huddled in the corner avoiding eye contact with anyone! “What’s up with her”, “oh, she’s finally reading twilight.” GASP! it’s true there are still people who are breaking it in right now!

    • TeamSeth

      “What’s up with her?”
      “She’s finally reading Twilight”

HAHAHAHA  That made me giggle inappropriately.

I think newbies nowdays would be best off having a ‘Hangover’ type experience, the whole working backwards unravelling the glorious mysteries. Can you imagine the shock of discovering that Wyck wanted to kick Taylor to the curb, and then that Chaske was not the first Sam thus taking you on a whole extensive(well maybe not that extensive) detour re: Solomon & Krys and being disappointed when you come to a deadend, but then joyfully return to the highway via CathyCougar and ultimately – The Bed.

PS Have not actually seen either Hangover movie but I did watch MTV awards and assume there isn’t too much else to the plot.

  • Cathy

We are normal people yes! you couldn’t  have said this in any better way. I’m so glad.
I’m a newborn since the very second I got to chapter two in Twilight’s first book and that will be october 2010…OMG! I can’t read anything else because I feel it’ll be a betray so silly I know…and I used to read a lot I mean a lot… now I just can’t read anything else I still have to re-read my Saga one more time…(that’ll be the fifth time)… can’t get enough of it…I also discoveried 100 monkeys and I’m going to see them when they come here to Europe so excited…yes

Newbie since Feb 2010.  I’ve read the series 4 times (I think) and Midnight Sun a billion, since it’s a convenient copy on my wk computer.  I rememeber the feeling, but eventually you move on, but NEVER forget.

it is important to not freak out a newbie….I try to stay under the radar as much as possible….
I mean, how can you explain why you know about Nikki and Oregano’s friendship…how Nikki had a scene with the kid from Into the Wild in the movie Lords of Dogtown, and that was the connection that brought kristen and Nikki together…things were ok when it was nikki and rob and kristen and oregano…..then hmmmmmm, kristen made a move for rob, dumped oregano and destroyed her friendship with nikki….
yeah, best not to freak people out with that weird knowledge…why do I know this? is that normal?

  • s.kay

I came to Twilight late, after Eclipse was out in theaters. I was so determined to not like a “teenage” series about vampires of all things! One night after the kids were in bed I came across Twilight on TV and it seemed like just maybe the story line was interesting enough to check out the books… Then well, you know the rest.

It was overwhelming when I first started looking at things online. There was so much to read and watch! I still come across articles and videos I didn’t know about. I was lucky to find LTT early on though. :) so glad to find a place where I feel NORMAL! :)

  • Cat P.

oh yes, I’ve met some that just recently started and finished the series and it ends up they actually make me feel embarrassed about how much I know about the series, the movies, the cast, the back stories, the crews, the gloves on Nikki, the…. *facepalm*
hey don’t judge! You are just like me!

    • Anonymous

Yeah well I haven’t finished the new guide because most of what I read I already knew.  I did flip to the back to see all the drawings and pics though so I’m maybe halfway through.

  • eo

I am 2010 new. Yes, I have always wondered about the Nikki/ Rob thing.. I have always been in denial. Did they really have sex? I will be mortified if this is true. She dosen’t seem like Rob’s type at all….
