A Thank You Letter…

Dear Katelin,

I saw you at Oinkster on Sunday but you were leaving and I was standing in line and couldn’t yell loud enough to get your attention. When my friends asked who you were I said that’s Katelin… she was the person who gave me Twilight to read for the first time, they oh-ed and ah-ed in a bit of a shared moment of understanding. How far we had come from that day you walked into my office, handed me that paperback telling me to just read the first 100 pages and tell you what I thought, till now. There’s been a WHOLE lotta in between then and now… this blog, writing again, our readers, the movies, the OTHER books in the series, meeting Stephenie, like a billion things. I mostly thought about how I don’t think I’ve ever written to you before here at Letters to Twilight, because honestly without you none of us you be here right now. So I’m here today to write you a thank you letter because you deserve one.

My own personal collection. SHHHHH don't tell

It’s funny to think back on staying up reading so late that first night because (of course) I got sucked in and couldn’t put down the world of Edward and Bella and then excitedly im-ing you the next morning saying we needed to discuss. Who cares about the difference between unique views and actual views and if SheKnows is going to feature whatever we were working on that day… the REAL issues were finding out WHAT Edward was and Bella’s Dad really knew what was going on! Oh and can you believe that girl from In The Land of Women (for reals yall) is going to play Bella?

No, it’s n0t Thanksgiving and yes, I’m a tad annoyed at myself for not thinking of this idea in November but it doesn’t need to be a special time of the year to be thankful and I’m just glad I have this platform to tell you THANK YOU!!!  My life’s been all the better because you handed me that book.

Love and thanks!

Today’s Katelin day at LTT! Follow her, read her blog, love her!

Do you have someone to thank Twilight for? Did you discover it on your own? Who’s your Katelin?

Our internet game is ridiculous: LTR, The Forum, Twitter, The Store

I resisted reading Twilight- same with Harry Potter until I was convinced by family and friends). Not sure why. I guess I didn’t like all the hype and well, truth be told, I am a bit old for this stuff. But I did see a woman I work with reading it on the bus and I asked her opinion since it’s an opinion I trusted, and she liked it. When she was finished she lent it to me and I read all 4 books in about 5-6 days. That was during the winter blizzards on the East Coast in Feb-March, 2010. So I’m a newcomer. Then I discovered there was a whole Twilight Universe out there, but I happened on this site and I was HOME. With all the other normal fans!

  • The Plane Friend

I have a bunch of 7th graders to thank for my Twi-obsession. I was their lit teacher. They begged me to read it. I submitted–very unwillingly for about, idk, 10 pages. The rest is history.

  • Rob’s slow mo’ strut

Aww. What a sweet letter. A thank you from me to Katelin as well. Without her suggestion, you wouldn’t have started this blog and I would not have met all these amazing people.

You have an amazing collection going on there, Moon, by the way. All I have are the four books and the DVDs. I didn’t even buy the Bree Tanner book. However I would have gotten the other stuffs if they were available here.

Ahem, a little bit of news I’d like to share here. I don’t think you all remember but I previously mentioned none of the movies ever releasing where I live. Well, we’re about 365 days late BUT OH MY GOD ECLIPSE RELEASED HERE TODAY! My two best friends and I are making plans for next weekend even though we’ve all seen it about 10 times (Twilight had the most number of views I believe). So yeah, there you go. Had to share it with some one.

I’m prepared to be blown away from seeing Rob on the big screen FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME!

(Excuse my excess use of the caps lock button. I’m just excited in case it wasn’t obvious :))

    • chochang

wow! what a great story! you’re lucky to have such amazing friends! :)

      • Rob’s slow mo’ strut

Thanks :) I sure do. I feel blessed to have such good friends. We’re super thrilled about seeing The Pretty’s pretty face on the big screen.

Enjoy the movie!!! How fun to see it on the big screen for the first time :)

  • chochang

believe it or not, my Katelin was a Unicorn.. it was early 2008 when my friend Gian lent me Twi and New Moon. i was so eager to finish the series that i even volunteered to purchase Eclipse and BD for him! now that i remember it, i’m semi first-hand embarrassed. haha :)

  • Deborah Blount

We probably ALL have someone to thank – mine are Brooke (30 year old step-daughter) and Priscilla (my friend for over 30 years).  They BOTH wanted me to read it and I thought, this is weird and I don’t like sci-fi, I really just like tortured people and surely teenage vampire love isn’t tortured.  Show you that I don’t know anything!!!!  THANKS EVERYONE for loving the twi-world and laughing at it also.  I tell my husband, I only tease the ones I love!!

My daughter has her bff to thank.  She got all four books for Christmas and as she read one, she passed it off to my daughter.  They were both absorbed for a week over Christmas break. I resisted for over a year, until Jan. or Feb. of 2010, because I wasn’t into vampire books.  I then passed them on to my mom.  The rest is history.

I like Katelin’s angle.  ‘Read the first 100 pages and tell me what you think’.

I’ve said it before and I will say it a million times: Twilight changed my life. I sort of wish it had been One Hundred Years of Solitude or The Dharma Bums or something like that, but it wasn’t, and I am forever grateful. <3

    • TeamSeth

haha, dharma bums… that book. I read that book and New Moon sitting on the same couch at Mr. Seth’s old apartment.  If I could take back reading dharma bums, I totally would.

I was trying to think of another “smart person book” and that was the one I could see from my computer. :)

someone said I thank Katelin too & I do too!
I don`t really know how I got to read them… I’m always searching what to read (blogs) and I was so very into it, that I got to share it, at the beginin’ no one I knew had heard about them (the saddest part of my beautiful country) so I went online and found LTT, back in the days of pocket Edward and all that stuff, so I got my aunt, sister, friends… everyone! all of them got to see the movies cuz I urged them to do so too, and here I am… suddenly I want to read them all over again.

  • http://twitarded.blogspot.com/ Snarkier Than You

I often think back to the day Jenny handed Twilight to me and totally turned my life upside-down! Mostly I thank her, but sometimes I want to wring her neck for doing this to me – lol…

My Katelin is an Alice. Yes, 20 year old Alices’ really do exisist! And even though she hounded me everyday on where I was at in the book and what I thought about it, she changed my life. She helped me through a dark time and through that has given me a whole new set of awesome friends.

    Thank you Alice!!

I ‘m going to have to echo Rob’s slo mo strut’s comment above and say thanks to Katelin as well. Without LTT & LTT friends, I would be a far more bored and less-well-rounded person. Seriously. I’ve learned so much & had so much fun around here! Plus LTT & commenters have led me to other awesome things, most recently Outlander, which I will be forever grateful for.

It was actually Stephenie herself who introduced me to Twilight. Okay, well, not in person of course, but she did an interview with Good Morning America for the release of Eclipse and I was impressed with her interview; she seemed like a well-spoken & intelligent author and the books sounded like they had an interesting premise – despite the fact that they were about vampires, which had never really interested me much – so I picked up Twilight the next day and haven’t looked back since.

Random: Looks like we ARE going to Montreal for part of the Honeymoon.  Any food and fun suggestions = awesome.  particularly dance clubs and bars/lounges :D  Also, weather appropriate dressing suggestions for Oct 10th-20th(?) would be most welcomed :)

      • operarose

        will email!

    • Anonymous

Oh Outlander!  On the second book now.

      • operarose

Enjoy! The 2nd and 3rd were good! I just started the 4th and am slowing down, only because my eyes feel a wee bit sore (3,000 pages in 3 weeks….reminds me of college)

        • ladyofthemeadow

I just finished the last one! What a ride! It’s going to feel like a loooong wait til the next one comes out. Now manofthemeadow is on book 2.

          • operarose

Did you like all of them? My biggest fear is that they will not stay as good as the first few! But so far, I’m still in love…

          • ladyofthemeadow

Yes, I like all of them!! I enjoyed the parts in America, especially once they got their own place. Their daily life is interesting I think.

Hey y’all! I’m commenting! I have my lovely friend Lindsay, @ElRaeRae, to thank. WAY back in the summer of 2006 my new hostess at the time was coming in the restaurant early just to read and poring over the book on her breaks. I finally had to know what it was. She said “It’s this amazing book that takes place here in Washington and the main character is a high school girl who just moved from Arizona. AND she’s in love with a vampire. Do you like vampires?” And the rest is history. We are so OG that we were two of the 125 waiting at Barnes & Noble at midnight for Breaking Dawn to be published. Lindsay and I have spread the word far and wide since then and can probably take credit for at least 20 people in the fandom. (NOT the crazy ones! To be clear.) That first book gained me a BFF in Linds, brought my lil sis and I closer together and introduced me to an infinite number of friends here on LTT. Who I’ve now met FIVE of! Love Lindsay, love the book, love Moon & UC, love the site, love all of pus! (Whoops, got a little mush!) Thanks, Katelin for giving us LTT!

I don’t know if not creating crazies should be a proud moment. I think I would be pretty happy to say that I introduced Twilight to the girl who sends out the cheese wheels and nipple clamps, or someone who went on to get a Twittoo. Or say “I introduced Twilight to my friend, and she end up getting arrested for breaking into the Cosmopolis set and licking pie off Rob”.

      • Minderelly9

True. So very, very true. Be proud my crazy friends!!!

  • Ashlee Newton

Lol I have my Dad to thank! I was at Target and he pointed out the books to me (He had seen a report on them in the news) and told me I should read them. I was somewhat reluctant…this was right after Eclipse was published but I demolished them!! I couldn’t stop reading then I became obsessed! Lol it’s been 4 years or so and my Dad refuses to admit that he got me to read them…that he’s the reason I love the series so much!

    • Anonymous

      Go Dad!

  • Abcoolie

I first heard about Twilight in an article about Stephenie in Newsweek. That’s how big of a dork I am. It was right before Breaking Dawn was released. I was totally dismayed because YA lit is kind of my thing and I had missed it! (In my defense, I had had a baby, quit my job, and moved 3 times in 3 years. The only thing I was reading was Newsweek.) I put the books on hold at the library and the rest is history.

Thanks, Kim, for telling me over and over about your “vampire books” until I read them… and for letting me come over late at night to borrow the next one when I caved and admitted to myself that I did want to read more instead of going to sleep.
Katelin, thanks for hooking Moon.  ‘Cause I’m a little less (more?) normal than Kim now and it’s so nice to hang out with the girls here.

    • TeamSeth

hehe, I came over late to my sister’s place to borrow just like that!  “Hi, I know it’s 10pm…on a Tuesday…and you usually go to bed at 9:30 cuz you have to wake up early cuz you’re a teacher, but…Can I come borrow New Moon?!”   yay!

  • http://prettysandyfeet.com katelin

aw too funny you saw me at oinkster! maybe we’ll run into each other there again some time :)

but seriously, you are so welcome and i’m so glad i could introduce you to the world of twilight and so happy you were just as into it as me (and now clearly moreso, and it’s awesome!)

  • TeamSeth

OT: I watched Inception the other night and Ellen Page’s character’s “totem” was a chess piece and I thought of BD immediately (even though it’s a bishop and BD cover doesn’t have a bishop on it)  #twilightiseverywhere

    • Anonymous

I didn’t catch that.  Good eye

    • Anonymous

Speaking of #twilightiseverywhere there’s a guy running for mayor in our town who’s last name is Condon.  And every time I see one of his campaign signs I get excited for Breaking Dawn all over again.  Normal.

      • TeamSeth

        Quite normal!

  • Anonymous

I have my dear friend Ali to thank for ruining, I mean enhancing, my life. I paid her back by introducing her to Fan Fiction. Tit for tat. We are both quite happy down this rabbit hole.

She is now my FF beta… he he he

    • Anonymous

Fan Fiction is a whole other monster!! I thank all my LTR girls for relentlessly telling me to read it. I still try to maintain my Real Book Reading but people are wondering why I don’t read as many books as I used to!

Love your FF and your beta, baby :)

  • Anonymous

I made this for you guys.  I have had only 3 Pimms Cups, so I may be giggling a bit too much but not enough to not be sincere in that LTT has made my disturbing obsession so much more #normal. xoxoxo
