Questions for Stephenie about Breaking Dawn

Warning: You’re gonna want to pick up Breaking Dawn again after this next letter

Dear Stephenie and LTT readers,

Today’s letter is going to be one in which I let you in on a poorly-kept secret around the “Plane” household. I have read the Twilight saga WAY too many times. No such thing, you might think, right? Well, wait until you see all the questions I have for Stephenie in the unlikely event that I’m ever lucky enough to meet her. I keep hoping to somehow wrangle that meeting somehow, someday…but I somehow doubt it’ll happen…so I’ll drive all of you crazy with my questions instead:

Questions I Had After Reading the Initial Saga (Approximately 5,000 Times):

What do you MEAN there are wolves?

How, at the end of Breaking Dawn, do Aro and the rest of the Volturi not know about the Quileute werewolves until they see them at the conflict? At the end of New Moon, Alice touched hands with Aro and he read all her thoughts. Bella had told Alice about Jacob, their friendship, and his genetic inheritance. So wouldn’t Aro already know about them when the Volturi head into clearing to face off with the Cullens ?

I loved Jacob’s narration for part 2 of BD. And I was glad to get back to Bella’s so I could experience her conversion. However, why wasn’t there a part 4 of BD? When the Volturi threat came, I think you should have switched perspectives again and written that whole episode from Edward’s point of view. Because, you know, we all love him and want to be in his head. Plus, knowing what everyone was thinking (and not just Bella) during that last battle would have been great. Also, I would have loved to see through his eyes his transformation from eternal pessimist to optimist. But would that have ruined possible future plot lines?

How can Jacob, Sam, Quil, and Embry not ask their parents about Embry’s heritage? Seriously, if I thought my father had cheated on my mother, I’d have to ask…even if I didn’t want to know.

Yeah! What about ME? We could get married on a FRIDAY

Would one of the Quileute werewolves have imprinted on Rebecca Black if she’d been around? If so, who? And if she were to show up, already married, and imprinting happened, how would that play out?

If Jasper is basically a part of the Cullen family because of Alice, and the “vegetarian” lifestyle wasn’t really his first choice, what would he choose if the Cullens weren’t around and he and Alice weren’t with them? Would the emotional climate of the humans he killed be enough to finally turn him or would he be happy enough once he had Alice that it wouldn’t matter?

Edward doesn't want ME?

Was Tanya a bit like Rosalie in that she wanted Edward simply because he didn’t want her? Or were her feelings for him potentially serious? Would she have fallen for him if he’d returned her affection? I mean, this is Edward.

What is Jane’s deal with Aro? If it weren’t for Chelsea, would she stay with the Volturi? Is it just Chelsea that binds her to Aro? She seems to be so infatuated with Aro that she worships him (in a rather sick way) and that makes me wonder whether it’s all Chelsea or not… but she’d be a rather terrifying loose cannon, so I think she’s better off with Aro.

If Renesmee has the mental abilities of someone much older than either her actual age or her physical-looking age, what does she make of the strange imprinting thing? Is she developed enough to think it’s creepy that this 16-year-old guy is head-over-heels for a baby?

I LOVE Leah, and really, really want to read book half-narrated by her…and hope that in it, she and Nessie become friends, she finds love, and stays sarcastic. Promise one thing, though, please? Please don’t make Leah imprint on Jake and Nessie’s super-human, one quarter human, one quarter vamp, and half werewolf son, ok? And for that matter, promise she won’t imprint on Sam and Emily’s son either. Please? Because that would be too contrived…and just plain icky.

Are you reeling from the amount of minutiae my head is capable of dredging up? Shocked anyone would spend this much time obsessing over details of a fantasy world? Annoyed that you now have MORE nagging questions? I think it’s only fair that you now riddle me (well, us) with yours. What do you want to know?

And Stephenie, you know you want to guest-post and answer all these questions, don’t you? Please!
Love,
The Plane Friend

Um, didn’t you forget the most important question of ALL, Plane Friend? HOW did all of this get by Charlie, the police officer, with NO QUESTIONS ASKED? I get it- Jake shifted (wait.. is that what we call it in Twi?) in front of him & it creeped him out so he decided to let it slide, but WHAT? COME ON!? It’ll be interesting to see if that’s believable on screen!!!

What questions do YOU have about Breaking Dawn?

Interesting questions!  Especially the Aro/wolves thing. I believe one question has been answered already in Breaking Dawn – Rebecca Black DID come home, and Paul imprinted on her.  I remember the lines in the book where Jacob was complaining to Bella about how him and his bad temper were always over at his house eating all the food.

    • Anonymous

Ok – I’ll be the Twi nerd.

Rachel came home and Paul imprinted on her. Rebecca is Rachel’s twin sister who is married and lives in Hawaii.

      • http://twitter.com/tlmfarmgirl Tammy Masters

AHHH – I forgot about the Hawaii one…. so you are right – I do have to go re-read the book again! LOL

  • Anonymous

That was a lot of question that I have not thought about.  Mainly because I was a not a fan of BD.

  • Anonymous

Those are some awesome questions Plane Friend. I too have read the books many, many times (I’ve literally lost track… They’re like the movie Dirty Dancing or Pretty Woman; it’s like visiting an old friend and never fails to brighten your day.)

So I too have asked many questions like these: Where does the fur go when the wolves shift back to human?/Where does come from when shifting to wolf? – Why would animal blood make their eyes golden when animal blood is every bit as red as human blood? – What is the extent if the venom’s “fixing” powers? Does it zap out fat, like a very painful tummy tuck? What happens if a person is changed and they have fake boobs? Does the venom devolve it so they end up with their old smaller boobs? Do they end up looking like dried up cumquats? – Bella hides the fact that she is going to tell Renesmee to run from Edward to keep it from Aro before the standoff, but tells Renesmee. If they had to run, if things would have went that way, she had just totally screwed Jacob and Renesmee because Aro touched Nessie, meaning he knew in that moment and so did Edward, but yet Edward seem surprised a little later when the Volturi deliberated and Bella told Jacob to run with Nessie.

    • The Plane Friend

Oooo–you’ve got some interesting questions too, TJE! I think Stephenie created some serious logic problems for herself when she made Aro omniscient once he touches you.

      • MeadowLupine

No kidding. That is one *hell* of a superpower. I found myself wondering why Aro didn’t have more compassion after experiencing SO many other complete lives.

    • The Plane Friend

Also, the thought of what happens to fake boobs during a transformation is kind of hilarious. I imagine venom would eat through silicon :)

      • MeadowLupine

Oh, those things would be gone…

      • Anonymous

Me too. But would that mean the venom would shrink your chest back to pre surgery size? Would they look wrinkled and sad with that extra skin you acquired that is no longer filled ? Would the venom eat through the silicone and then fill the space with vampire venomy stuff? Would the venom be able to say, “oooo you made a big mistake with these honey,”?

        So many questions!

    • MeadowLupine

–There’s a correlation between human hair length and shagginess of fur, so I think that can give you a little idea…
–I’ve also wondered what it is about human blood that makes it so very different from animal blood.
–And, as I answered somewhere else, I think you’d have your cumquats back (and I’d be envious, as I think li’l boobs are pretty).
–I think Aro and Renesmee touch before Bella tells her anything of vital importance, but I need to crack out the book to be certain.
–Stephenie has said that the body is completely frozen when vampirization occurs, in case that answers any of your body questions. E.g., hair can never grow back out. Alice’s hair is short forever, and vampire haircuts can never be reversed. I’m frankly amazed any of them have any hair left after several decades. I wonder why the Volturi aren’t bald? Maybe the hair follicles are super-strength…

      • Anonymous

On the hair thing – Hmm, maybe it can’t grow, but stays strong and doesn’t fall out.
I think you are right no the info to Renesmee.  Bella prepared, but told no one.  I do remember her saying something in the tent that morning, but can’t remember when Aro touched her.

        • Anonymous

it was after she told her so it makes no sense at all

    • cosi bella

love the fake boobs question !

But why stop there?  what would happen to a pacemaker? an IUD? fillings? piercings?…..any more?

      • Anonymous

Oh no, my musings didn’t stop there. I think I’ve mentioned it before. I envision things like fake knees being rejected by the venom as it heals the body forming perfect body parts. Vampires being changed should come with a warning; watch for flying parts rejected by venom.

I mean venom fixes vision and heals things, so does it consider crooked teeth something to fix? Cavities fixed/fillings rejected, definitely. It must regrow pulled/missing teeth, so implanted fake teeth would get rejected. depending on how extensive, you might end up with a pile of parts. “well Suzie, that in the corner is all you have left of the human version of you. Was there any part of you that was real?”

        • Anonymous

And yet, I seem to remember at least one of the (Irish?) vamps was pretty curvy…so it’s nice that SM didn’t think that a few extra pounds was something that needed to be “fixed”.

Mr. Slut actually asked that the other day (he occasionally quizzes me, it’s adorable. It’s possible I had to look up the exact date of Edward’s turning. Yep.)

But I wonder how far that goes? What if you are morbidly obese, to the point of it threatening your health? Do you just slim down a few sizes? Or are you suddenly a size 0? Do your arteries unclog, or does it not matter?

          • Anonymous

her name is Siobhan i think (the curvy one)

    • Anonymous

And what about if Leah shaves her legs? Or doesn’t? Can they all tell because her wolf legs start looking really shaggy?

  • HowToBe

I’ve always wondered why the wolves are ok with all the actually friendly, human-blood drinking vamps that come at the end of BD. I know Jake imprinted on Nessie, thus they have to save her. AND that all the bad vamps are going far away to hunt, but STILL. Would Sam really, REALLY let them all that close to the tribe?

    • MeadowLupine

Amen. I also have a *really* hard time with this. I mean, these vamps are *borrowing cars to MURDER people* for god’s sake. The Cullen’s are aiding and abetting!!

      • MeadowLupine

Ack! *please* pretend that apostrophe isn’t there. sleep-posting here.

      • Anonymous

only this gives you a hard time? mybe you need a re-read

  • Anonymous

If they do in fact show Jacob shifting in front of Charlie, they need to show Charlie mouthing the words “WTF” and freaking out.  That would make it realistic and give it the bit of humor that always come from Charlie.

    • MeadowLupine

This is one of the scenes I’m most looking forward to. I hope they do it right! :) It’s just such a rich opportunity…

      • cosi bella

I don’t believe Charlie has a “freaking out” gene.  I always pictured Charlie/Billy Burke doing what Charlie Billy Burke does best: Deadpanning—–>   “well I’ll just pretend i didnt see that….” He won’t miss a beat – and we’ll believe it – cos that’s how he rolls.  :))

        • Anonymous

And then he’ll drink some more Vitamin R… :)

  • Cat

Alice touched Aro in New Moon. Alice’s visions change with people’s decisions. So by that time, no one had a clue that Bella would have a demon child and even need protection from the wolves, etc. etc.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, I’d think he’d know they exist, but wouldn’t look for them to be working with the Cullens as they weren’t exactly on friendly terms during NM.

      • cosi bella

Exacary.  The vamp/wolf collaboration wasn’t even in the picture then.

    • MeadowLupine

Just the existence of the wolves, I think though, would bring the Volturi down on them. One of Caius’ missions in life is to wipe them from existence. I’d think even a hint that life-forms even *resembling* werewolves would bring about a Caius crusade. It becomes clear to Caius by the end of BD that the wolves are shapeshifters and *not* werewolves, but I left the saga worrying about the Quileutes future…

      • Anonymous

But if Aro learned about them from Edward’s thoughts he’d know they weren’t the kind of wolves the Volturi worked to exterminate.  I doubt Aro even bothered mentioning it to Caius.

  • Anonymous

Heavens, I hope Stephenie doesn’t have any ideas as horrible as yours for who Leah could imprint on.  Those are just awful!

    • The Plane Friend

      Aren’t they, though?

  • Anonymous

I haven’t re-read, or had any questions in a while. But when I have re-read the thing that strikes me is that I forget Edward is a vampire, and then I remember and am somehow disappointed because for a minute I was thinking in real life terms, and then I’m all boo vampires don’t exist and am taken out of the story for a minute, until I tell myself well maybe they do…
Plane Friend, I liked your does Tanya have real feelings for Edward question, good one. EPOV…..ah…..I’m going to pretend I didn’t read about that….the hurt…..that terrible book Stephanie couldn’t finish on a dare…..chicken..bok bok bok….

  • Anonymous

Also, Stephanie guest blogging. Moon and UC, send her off an email. Let her know she could use a pen name and only we would know it was her. She could just name herself a name that we don’t recognize, and we’d know it was her because you guys don’t post letters from people we’ve never heard of. She could be Mrs. Samuel, or A Chick You Might Meet By a Dumpster, or BookTease. She could even write something really angsty about Twilight, and we’d understand.

  • Anonymous

Speaking of terrible books, does anyone think this is new territory in nerdy fandom? Books that half come out and will never be finished and there are a million people who would have loved if it had been (and weren’t not finished because the author died)? This needs some official name. Like the term Mary Sue came from the famous star trek fan fic.

    • Anonymous

there should be an offical term because it is the cause of 99% of adolescent suicide since 2008. we should come up with one here on LTT. YOU SHOULD DO IT! you’re pretty good at this stuff

      • cosi bella

“there should be an offical term because it is the cause of 99% of adolescent suicide since 2008. ”

        There already is:

        Opusdesertumcide /opus,desertum-sid/
Noun: 1. The crime of causing another person to kill themselves due permanent abandonment of an unfinished work.

Known in colloquial terms in literary circles as “to pull a Stephanie”

        • Anonymous

Hear that Steph? We could sue you.

  • Sagalvr

Great job Plane Friend, you definitely raised some worthy points :) I too love Leah and find her angsty story the most realistic one in the saga. Being trapped in a small pack with your used-to-be-true-love and used-to-be-best-friend-cousin completely in love is a new circle of hell (Dante should have written about it). Not to mention loosing her dad at a young age, not being able to tell her mom what she and her brother are, having no one to talk to who isn’t an immature boy that hates you, and having to protect stinky vampires and a human girl who has everything. Oh, add to that no fertility and no imprinting–this girl deserves a HEA! Leah 2012! I always wondered why Stephanie was fair to the other characters and didn’t treat Leah better by the end of Breaking Dawn. I can only hope it’s not the end for her character and we get to see what she gets in life. I hope its independence, self-actualization and real love from an amazing person. (That’s what I wish for everyone :P )

    • Sisterpenguin

Being waaay too picky here (I’m in the middle of BD) but Sue Clearwater took over Harry’s position as one of the elders so she knew exactly what was happening with Leah and Seth.

Otherwise, yeah, you gotta love a bit of Leah

    • Anonymous

don’t get your hopes up. it’s Stephanie after all. she used to love us a whole lotta more before she got mixed up with the movie business. i always thought when she’s done with BD 1&2 she’ll finally have some time to write us a new book, ANY BOOK! (what happpened to the host? i really loved that book and she said something about ghosts, witches and mermaids. what  happend to all THAT? and don’t talk to me about the f**king guide, that was a JOKE!) and now she’s producing other people’s movies too?!  my new user name: DISAPPOINTEDFAN :(
      * sorry ladies i got carried away, but hay this is a TWILIGHT blog, i think you’re used to some angst.

      • Sagalvr

You’re so right! Many people can produce a movie but only Stephanie can write the way she does. The Host follow-up would be heavenly to read–I want the Seeker and the Soul ASAP :)

        • Anonymous

I am secretly hoping that we would have those before BD 2 comes out. and maybe- just maybe- we could start LTTH since we will have nothing Twi-related to talk about after that.

  • Anonymous

Mr. GWI got some sweet Breaking Dawn Boxer shorts the other day, unwittingly. They are black with white and red chess pieces.

  • Sisterpenguin

Ah what excellent timing Plane Friend: I’m reading the saga for the *mutter, mumble*th time (Leah’s just spilled on empathising with Rosalie).

Definitely a big query on the Aro and the wolves front. Also he would have known about them from Irina as well. That dude just knows tooo much to make anyone comfortable (who wants him dwelling on your feathers and eggs?).

Jasper was already shying away from feeding on humans so he probably would have discovered the alternatives at some stage – maybe.

Jane’s adoration of Aro? Smells of sugar daddy to me. Mind you I reckon I’d be pretty fond of anyone who rescued me from burning at the stake.

I think my biggest questions are to do with anatomy and embryology:
    — Yes! The eyes! Would they be pinker if it was pig’s blood (closer DNA to human)?
    — Vampires don’t change and yet Edward had some method of genetic transference which you’d think would be used up in one *ahem* incidence but they did the deed more than once… and also Joham fathered four hybrids?
Too many other questions to go into…

    Bring on the guest post!

PS It’s phased in Twiworld, shifted in True Blood Land (Alcide yum!)

    • Anonymous

you don’t have to *mutter, mumble* it’s LTT, we don’t judge. the plane friend just confessed and i got no problem admitting that i used to read the Saga in a loope, finish breaking dawn and go back to twilight over and over again. i literally read nothing else for quite sometime.
( i don’t know why i always wanted to tell this to someone, i never did in real life though)

  • Sisterpenguin

And another question for Stephenie: have you given up on stepheniemeyer.com??? Just as well we have LTT

    • Anonymous

yup. Seth will probebly post something about the graphic novel v.2 hitting shelves in a few days. thanx Seth i don’t know what we would have done without you.
      * i miss TeamSeth

      • Anonymous

I just got an email from Amazon telling me my preordered Graphic Novel shipped, and I was like, Oh right! Yay!

        • Anonymous

i want one for my birthday(in 11 days). i don’t think i’ll get it though, my next birthday will come and it would be just coming out down here.

      • Sisterpenguin

Yeah but the last update was April!!! Nutin about BD the movie at all. Bah phooey

        • Anonymous

He never posts anything about the movies so no surprise there.

      • cosi bella

        Yeah – where IS TeamSeth??

        • Anonymous

          Honeymooning probably.

  • Anonymous

I’ll go all TwiNerd on the Jasper question: it’s implied that the killing of humans really starts to wear on Jasper even before he meets Alice. Remember, he leaves Maria and is moping around the country when he wanders into the diner. So it can be assumed that he would have eventually figured it out, even if it would have been hard for him.

Mmmm fall is a nice time for tweed.

  • Anonymous

What is with the creepy Aro/Jane relationship??  In NM he kisses her on the lips and his wife is RIGHT THERE in the room and then at the end of BD when Aro and Bella are talking about the necklace he gave her Jane snarls and ‘doesn’t approve’ and again his wife is RIGHT THERE (sorry about caps lock but no italics which would have been more subtle – I’m a less is more sort of person usually – but I digress) soooo anyway does anyone else find this super yuck??

PS I have loads of questions from BD, I think of them every time I read it (that’s a LOT) but I don’t write them down and my memory is shot so can’t post them atm.  If I think of any more ‘I’ll be back’.

  • KStewBoy

Is Jacob still 16 when he imprints on Renesmee? That can’t be right, can it?

    • Anonymous

Nothing about baby imprinting is right. Breaking Dawn is largely not right, hence the big fan divide when it came out. But I say all the better to draw silly pictures of!

    • Anonymous

Also, Breaking Dawn Part 2 should really just go musical, right?

    • Anonymous

I think he was 16 in New Moon, so depending on his birthday he is 17 or 18 by the time Renesmee comes around. Ooooh, who is twi-nerd enough to know if we know Jacob’s b-day? To follow Moon and UC’s lead, fake fabulous prizes will be awarded. Stephenie, this would be a great time to step in…
(and no, knowing TayTay’s b-day doesn’t count. I’m alllll over that one. *cough* Feb 11 *cough*)

      • Anonymous

that is not mentioned anywhere. wait i’ll go check the guide (finally some use for that crappy book even if it’s to win a fake fabulous prize)

        • Anonymous

here it is: January 14, 1990  yaaaaaaaaaaaaay i win!

          • KStewBoy

            Nerd!!

          • Anonymous

believe it or not: i happen to walk around with the whole saga tucked under my arm just in case of fabulous fake prizes

          • Sisterpenguin

And that, my friend, is the point of the Kindle app for iPhone… :-)

          • Anonymous

Just to sort out any confusion: i didn’t mean it litterally.

          • Anonymous

No no, your secret is out. That and we’ve all wanted to do that at some point or another.

          • Anonymous

YAY! Fabulous fake prizes! Now to put it on my calendar… or not. Fun fact, Jacob (according to this date) is less than one month younger than me. Weird.

    • Sisterpenguin

Ah but which is worse? If he’s only 16 or older. Either way, most peculiar

      • Anonymous

Yeah. There is no way around it. No matter how you look at it you have to face the ugly truth: Jacob falls in love with a BABY. *covers face with hands and whisper “why Stephenie?”*

  • Stacey

I have so many questions about Breaking Dawn that I could write pages full of them, but I’m on vacation right now and I would prefer enjoying the leaves changing colors. However, since I can’t help myself…what is up with the millions of new vampires? A little more backstory about them would be great! Just so I can, you know, tell them apart.

How old is Jane? Or more to the point when she was changed? She’s like a creepy 12 year old. So her relationship with Aro is seriously messed up or she’s his secret daughter. Maybe adopted daughter, like what Carlisle did. Except the twisted Volturi version of adoption.

    • Anonymous

There’s some backstory in the Official Guide that came out like two years after they said it would. I read it once, and now mostly keep it for the pretty pictures. It’s at home though, and not on hand, so I can’t remember how much detail is given.

      • Anonymous

i never completed reading it. i just skipped to the beautiful art wok

    • Sisterpenguin

Saddo to the rescue! Jane was changed at around 12 or 13 yoa in England with her twin Alec. They were chosen for their potential talent but not changed until they were about to be burnt to death for being witches some time prior to 800AD. It’s why she’s so crabby and resentful all the time (that’d be a teen then!)

  • Joy

Very interesting questions. They call it phasing in Twilight, not shifting.

  • GMB

The one thing that bothers me the most about the Saga is Jacob/Bella/Imprinting….Why would Bella even consider Jacob as a potential boyfriend when it is a very real possibility that he could imprint on someone and leave her, just like Sam did to Leah? Why would Jacob push so hard to be with Bella knowing that he has not imprinted on Bella but he most likely would imprint on someone, thus breaking Bella’s heart?

    • Anonymous

not to be an imprinting cheerleader or anything (Imprint-sten!)
but that is actually addressed. (<–nerd)

Jacob, and most of the pack, is under the impression that imprinting is rare, and what happened between Sam and Emily is uncommon. Remember, most of them, until it happens, think it's a myth, especially as it skipped a generation (or two?)

Also, imprinting does happen in nature (geese, I think, are the common example) (yeah, it's mostly birds, but we are talking about werewolves and vampires here, so let's not get too picky on feasibility, shall we?)

Last, Jacob is a selfish teenage jerk-ass boy. And Bella never did consider him, except for a few moments in the depths of a depressive episode in which she conceded that she would be slightly mildly happier with him than alone in a roundy-round chair forever.

Also last, there is the theory that they are mystically attracted to each other as a Jacob/Renessemmeme Fated End Game scenario.

No, I won't take this tweed off. It matches the turning leaves.

      • Anonymous

what myth? they are SHAPESHIFERS for goodness’ sake.
but i appreciate your efforts to justify the unjustifiable and make us feel better about the whole thing.

        • Anonymous

Remember? Jake was like, “we’re descended from wooollvvles, Bella! haha, hilarious! Let’s kiss, paleface!”

      • Sagalvr

“she would be slightly mildly happier with him than alone in a roundy-round chair forever” BAHAHAHAHAHA I just fell off my roundy-round chair ;D

    • Anonymous

yeah- that’s why i was never team jacob.
