Twilosophy – Emmett & Rosalie – just the muscle of the Cullen Family or so much more?

Dear Twilight,

I’ve been thinking… on the heels of the whole cell phone post I’ve been going back to the basics of Twilight… some Twilight origins posts if you will. So today we pose the question: do Emmett and Rosalie feel worthless since they have no special powers like the others? Edward can read minds, Alice can see the future, Jasper can change and effect moods, Bella has the crazy mind shield thing, Carlisle has a super vampire resistance to blood and well Esme… she’s married to him so she’s ok.

Hey guys, does anyone need their car fixed? Or maybe a log moved?

But what about poor Rosalie and Emmett… are they just the muscle of the Cullen family? Hauling logs before the wedding. Chasing after James. Keeping the cars maintained and installing stereos. Basically Emmett and Rosalie are the ex Best Buy employees the Cullens agreed to let live with them just because they’re handy around the house. Maybe this is why Rosalie is really so sully… after all these years she’s tired of the rest of the Cullens reading her mind or predicting her future or just plain out doing her. It really has nothing to do with the fact that Carlisle made her into a vampire when she was dying… and really talk about ungrateful.

Imagine if Em and Rose ever showed up in Voltera… Aro would be like “wait, who are you guys? Oh the Cullen’s hired help…. Yea well good luck with whatever… we don’t have any openings right now but we’ll keep you in mind.” Ya know the old don’t call us we’ll call you routine.

Let me get my wig on straight first THEN I'll tell you what I think

I posed the question to a few friends as we sat around talking with New Moon playing in the background… cause that’s something we do on a Sunday afternoon in LA. Right. One friend said isn’t Rosalie’s power being really beautiful? Um, while I’m sure that statement is more loaded and requires a totally different post that I can tackle today, I’m going to go with a NO. Her beauty has never gotten them out of a jam (or into one) the way say Alice’s power to see the future has. But maybe it’s her ability to be both lioness/mama bear while being vulnerable and able to tell the truth? If anyone’s the first to speak the truth, it’s Rosalie Hale. You wanna know if Rosalie thinks this whole Bella as Edward’s girlfriend is a good idea? Rosalie’s gonna tell you. You pondering major life decisions like whether to become a vampire or stay a fragile, killable human? Rosalie’s gonna tell you. You wanna know why your boyfriend’s “sister” resents your presence in her family? Rosalie’s gonna tell you.

Don't worry Edward, Emmett got this!

Then we talked about how Emmett was super strong but that’s not really a super power because they’re vampires, they’re all really strong. One friend also pointed out that Emmett is such a dope he probably doesn’t even know he’s not super special like Edward or Alice. But what about his courage? Is Emmett the reverse cowardly lion of the Cullen’s? It seems like anytime the shit goes down, Emmett is the first to jump in the mix and really that’s pretty invaluable in the grand scheme of life. Tracker going after Bella? Emmett’s got this. Werewolves out to attack the Cullen’s? Emmett’s got this. Carlisle needs to go feed before Bella gives birth and the Werewvoles need distracting? Emmett’s got this. Victoria on the lose and needs hunting down? Emmett’s got this. Bella needs to test her newborn vampy strengths? Emmett’s got this.

So really, I guess those ARE their super powers… they may not be as obvious as the rest of the Cullen’s but when a situation is gettin’ REAL real I want Emmett and Rosalie there… who else could reluctantly rub up on a tree in your jacket and make it look sexy?

We got this!
Themoonisdown

Have you ever thought about that? Did SMeyer just run out of ideas for Emmett and Rosalie or was it all part of the plan?

In the top pic Rosalie has no arms. FYI

  • Anonymous

It’s all part of the cunning plan: Emmett is the ultimate big brother (play fights, teasing, picking you up when you’re down) and Rosalie the bossy big sister (been there, done that, telling you what to do…).
    Family issues? Moi?

But to brass tacks, Emmett is meant to be strong, stronger than the average bear (sorry, they’re NOT bears) and Rosalie the most beautiful (talk to your magic mirror about that one). Some vamp powers are just a little more subtle in their usage.Team Left-over-siblings!

I love that when Edward’s talking about what Rosalie “brought with her” from her human life he mentions her stubbornness, not her beauty… which is totally an Edward thing to do.  But in the end her stubbornness ends up being a big plus for Bella in the end– w/o it there’s nobody to stand up for the demon baby, ’cause you know it’s 50/50 Esme would have caved.  Or maybe I just sympathize because it’s quite possible that stubbornness is my super-power.  It’s amazing what you can get done when you just decide that it WILL work the way you want it to.

      • TeamSeth

It’s amazing what you can get done when you just decide that it WILL work the way you want it to.

YES! I definitely think that’s a power. And Esme would’ve totes caved. “What’s best for the family” not “Bella’s choice”.  She would’ve caved.

      • Anonymous

Maybe it’s just jealousy that gets me focussed on the beauty bit so forgot about the stubborn bit – ’cause being stubborn is normal, isn’t it?

  • oh werd?

    Ha! Hale yea.

You know what? I *HAVE* thought about that. (TwiNerd!)
I don’t think Strong and Pretty are really superpowers, but knowing that others have something she doesn’t–you know that pisses Rosalie off. Emmett seems pretty psyched that he gets to shag a hot blonde forever, so I am not sure he minds so much.

As far as the story goes, I like that not all vamps are special, above the already very specialness they already are. Everyone is their own, sparkly little star of specialness. Do vampires have a “Free To Be You And Me”? Maybe Edward can write one for Renesmee. And yeah, let’s talk about her ingratitude. It’s been 60 years, Rosalie, stop talking about how much you wish you weren’t a vamp IN FRONT OF CARLISLE. Jebus. And? Poor Emmett! She’s like, “Yeah, it’s great that the love of my life and I get to stay young, passionate, and together forever, but you know really I’d rather be dead.” What a bitch.

    • http://www.kstewartnews.com KStewBoy

HAHA! I love it, Marble!  I’m glad I’m not the only one bugged by Rosalie’s attitude.  And I also love how at the back of BD in the Clan Index they have asterisks beside all the vampires with special powers.  Emmett and Rosalie (and Carlisle and Esme) don’t get a star, too bad.

      • Anonymous

The voting scene? Where she is all, “I wish someone was there to vote no for me”…I am always thinking, “Carlisle is standing Right. There.” Dayum.

        • Anonymous

On one hand: obnoxious.  On the other hand: no secrets in that house, so he knows anyway.  Vampires are notorious grudge holders.  Excuse for always dredging it up?  Not really.  But honesty has its upside.  I always felt more sorry for Emmett — “I love you dear, but I would rather have babies then die.”

          • Anonymous

Vampires are notorious grudge holders- ha! True.

And yeah, poor Emmett. Hopefully he’s not introspective enough to compare Bella’s feelings towards Edward (“I will do anything to be with you forever”) with him and Rosalie (“Things got better with you around, but I still would rather just be dead.”)

          • TeamSeth

Apparently their sex is so good that they destroy houses. So…maybe he doesn’t have time to be introspective.

        • http://www.kstewartnews.com KStewBoy

Yeah – that was a major dig at Carlisle.  Ouch.

      • Anonymous

You are not alone. She’s too bitchy for guys (not for Emmett apparently) and too hot for girls. You ever heard of a Team Rosalie?

        • Vampmedic

I actually saw a group of girls at a movie theatre wearing Team Rosalie shirts. I did a double take (at the shirts not the girls) and was like whoa really.

          • Anonymous

They must’ve run out of Teams, like me.

Team Rosalie? Really? That’s a new one.  Maybe just hard-core Nikki fans.  Are there such creatures?

          • Anonymous

Oh yes, there are hard-core Nikki Reed fans.  Moon once wrote about NR’s new tattoo and those fans were out in force, sense of humor noticeably missing.  Hmmm… here it is

On with the shiver discussion (anyone who haven’t read the books and planning on it, i’m warning you this comment is filled with spoilers): i’m sorry Marble (can we call you Marble too? Or is that KSB/MNS thing?) i couldn’t get myself to finish reading the first book. I read a BIG chunk of it and NOTHING happens. Also, i felt like Maggie didn’t take the time to establish thier love (them staring at each other while he’s in wolf form all these years so doesn’t count). I understand being fascinated by the mysterious: men/predators/men who are predators (i really do, i have this thing for big cats… I’m talking about animals) but that can’t be the base of their relationship, it’s so fragile. I’m not hating on the triology or anything. i just want to understand how you see it.

      • Anonymous

Interesting. (and…sure. Marble, MNS. Sometimes Team Seth sends me IMs that just say “SLUT!!!” which could be misread. Ahem.)

I see what you mean, esp if you don’t count the wolf/girl staring contest as relationship building.  I suppose I am just the sort of person who totally would have dated a boy who used to be a wolf and ended up on my deck.  The second two have more action, but they are paced similarly. I liked the dreamy slowness, and the aaannggggsttttt, but if you didn’t you may not like it. I also liked the mixed POV; that was interesting.

Do you know what bugged me the most?  If your bf is about to wolf out forever, skip class. srsly. get the homework from a friend, ya goody two shoes.

        • Anonymous

Phew! I was getting worried with the spoiler alert – I’m 40pages into the 2nd book (the chronic fatigue and accounts just have to wait).

I’m kinda ok with the relationship building ’cause of the wolfy communication system (trying not to spoil it for anyone else) and the impact of the first close looks (he did have a pretty big direct impact on their first encounter) – reminds me slightly of some other books I like, ahem.
I like the mixed POV as well, especially so far in the 2nd and am definitely with MNS on the skipping class bit – life’s short, live it

        • Anonymous

Yeah that made me nuts! I mean look at Bella, she had the guts to go all the way to Italy with nothing but a message with a wolf boy to reassure her dad. It’s not like your parents care anyway, you cook them lunch, for god’s sake!

I will just let you know that I needed an oxygen tank to deal with the *aaanngggst* at the beginning of Forever. So. Good. :::SAM:::

You are such a bad influence! I HAVE to do grown-up stuff before bedtime (in 2.5 hrs) NOT pick up Forever. I won’t won’t.

I haven’t read all the comments, so if someone beat me to the Twi-geek moment, my apologies:

I remember Edward explaining this to Bella in Twilight (book, not sure if he really explained it fully in the movie) about while some of the Cullens don’t have formidable gifts, becoming a vamp amplifies traits.  He went on to explain, Carlisle’s self-control, Esme’s ability to love, Emmett’s strength (that is said to rival most newborn’s super strength) and Rosalie’s tenacity or pigheadedness.

Anyway.  Emmett is nearly newborn strong forever.  And Rose is so stubborn she’s more-so than Bella.  ;)

    • TeamSeth

I think it’s funny how rude Edward is about Rose.  He totally wants her and is hiding it because he doesn’t want to give her that satisfaction.

Seriously, talk about holding a grudge. Carlisle was all, “Here, I made this hot chick into a vampire for you. Now you have a sexy mate! Yay!” and Edward’s all, “Rosalie Hale? You know she’s TOTALLY LAME, RIGHT?! Idiot. I’m going to go rebel now and eat some evil murderous humans.”  “I just want you to be happy, Edward. You are so lonely!”  “Really? You want me to be happy? With HER?! What were you thinking?  Oh, you were only thinking about yourself and your smug satisfaction of making me happy without considering that maybe I will only be happy with a human who won’t be born for 80 years. No, you didn’t consider THAT, did you? Huff!”  “Sorry.”  “I’m not listening.”

      • Anonymous

        I love you

      • Stacey

Carlisle was just trying to be the vampire verison of Match.com or EHarmony. Only in Carlisle’s version he takes two vampires who are completely not compatible and try to force them together. I mean, really all they have in common is that pesky blood lust and a shared belief that they are better and wiser than everybody else.

He DOES lick her tear in Twilight. I’m not typing it again, go read it in last post’s comments.

        • Anonymous

Okay, re-reading my comment i realized that i am totally sounding like my whiny 17 y/o self. For that i apologize.

          • http://www.kstewartnews.com KStewBoy

S’ok, NTO.  You got us all on your Tear Licking observation.  You can spend a post or two to gloat.  The gloat doesn’t even have to appear in the same letter as your original observation. :)
So what was the deal with Eddie tasting her tear anyways?  He doesn’t like food right?  Like he hates it?  I read last night in BD that he grudgingly let Bella shove some wedding cake in his mouth.  So I wonder what he thought of her tear.  Salty, like sweat?  Did he like it?  Was it like champagne to him?  I bet it was like champagne…. yum.  In my crude versions of Twilight, Eddie would have said, “Bella – c’mere, let me squeeze some more of that outta ya”

          • Anonymous

            Yep. Definitely a bloke

          • Anonymous

I don’t know! (guess i’ll never). He smiles afterwards, either it tasted really good or really bad, he was thinking if he can spit it back out without her noticing.

          • TeamSeth

Wait it’s in Twilight for sure?  I looked this up!  Or is it in Midnight Sun?

          • Anonymous

Well, you didn’t look that hard, it’s in Twilight.

          • TeamSeth

            I read your comment :)

          • http://www.kstewartnews.com KStewBoy

Teamnoone posted the entire passage in the last letter.  I think Stephanie should have done more with this idea of Eddie drinking Bella’s tears.  Wouldn’t Bella’s tears be a gateway drug to her blood?

          • Anonymous

            Bella’s tears are Blood Methadone!

          • Anonymous

If she had done that, there would have been no way for her to dodge the question: does

I think Rosalie and Emmett might have the best powers of all. Just think about it…Rosalie has the power of the bitch face. She was terrifying high school girls since the 1930’s with her scowl. She really doesn’t to do anything, but make others feel inferior with a well placed insult.

Then there’s my favorite, Emmett. He is probably dumber than a box of rocks, which makes him more powerful than most vampires and their tendency to overthink things. He also has the simplicity of a hyperactive toddler. What will Emmett do? Who the heck knows, because he just does whatever flits into his brain. His only weakness would have to be his ability to be easily distracted by shiny things, butterflies or Nascar.

    • Anonymous

I always wondered about Emmett’s mentality, i mean if this is supposed to be him with his mind and mental ab sharpened/enhanced then what would a human Emmet be like?

And poor Alice was the one getting the shocks and the straitjackets.

      • Anonymous

That was supposed to be abilities.

        • Anonymous

I think with Emmett ab is the correct version. Anyone hear a six-pack calling?

  • http://twitter.com/TwilightPack Twilight Pack Blog

What does Rose bring? -Family-. Carlisle’s little “clan” is held together because it’s a Family. Little crazy Alice wanted in on that-Jasper resisted his urge to be solitary! There is nothing holding them there other than the family togetherness. Even Aro ponders over Carlisle’s “clan” as its not “normal” for such a large group to live together without “persuasion.”
Rose’s last nice human experience was gazing into the big dark eyes of the beauty baby of her childhood friend feeling the joy the simple little family shared and trying to convince herself that she’ll have it better..only to be brutalized and left for dead She knew she was her own (human) families salvation her marriage was to assure her father’s continued employment during the depression-she clearly has a sense of family obligation.
One of my favorite mental images is of Rosalie running in the woods coming across Bear vs Emmett seeing those eyes that reminded her of that baby boy.. You know she had.. to take that bear out before she carried the mangled body of Emmett 100 miles to Carlisle to change him. How could Emmett not love that?
Although Rose “murdered” a few humans she is does claim to have never touched human blood, that’s one tough broad!

Emmett is not Just Strong. Even Edward was curious to see who would win in a match between Felix (reigning heavy weight vamp champ) and Emmett!
In Twilight all Vampires are better looking but not all beautiful (see James) Rose was beautiful pre vampdom!
Edward being a Masen and Rosalie being a Hale they both would LOVE to argue I imagine Rosalie kept Edward from being a total introvert
